medical vs surgical

hi

was wondering if anyone can give me any help or advice...

I've just been for a second scan at the EPU which sadly showed a blighted ovum. I was half expecting this to happen after the first scan but still in shock and feeling very down.

my body is showing no signs of miscarrying so I want to get things kick started so my body can get back to normal.

It took a long time for my cycle to return to normal after stopping the pill - do the different types of miscarriage management affect the time it takes for your cycle to return to normal again?

no, I don't think they do. It's my observation that it can be longer after ERPC for MMC than after a natural Mc but I think that's more to do with the body not having recognised the pregnancy has ended so it takes longer for cycle to resume than the method of dealing with the MMC.
I think you would probably be back to a normal cycle quicker from this point by opting for either medical or surgical management than by waiting for a natural MC if your body shows no signs of recognising it.
It's a rubbish choice though, just a question of which is least-worst for you.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Flowers

I'm not sure about medical MC but for a surgical MC I found that although I had to wait a while for my first AF post op (about 5 weeks) my cycle became regular again after that. Overall I think that there are likely to be more important factors to consider when deciding which option is best for you.

If you want more guidance about which option to choose the Miscarriage Association provides a good summary. Also if you want some more practical advice there are other threads on this forum where people have talked about their experiences of both options. And obviously you can post your own questions as well. But the key thing is that there's no right or wrong - it comes down to what feels best to you.

So sorry starfish, its just shit isn't it.

Everyone is different so as Forester says just go with what feels best for you. I remember the feeling of just wanting it over with. To give you my personal experience, for my first miscarriage I had the medically managed one with the pessaries. This really didn't work very well for me, took a long time to work and although my cycles returned back to normal fairly quickly my body just felt wrong for ages (sore nipples all through my cycle, odd bleeding etc). I had a natural early miscarriage for my second one, after which I went back to normal much more quickly. I'm just half way through waiting for my second scan to confirm that the pregnancy is not going to progress but again showing no signs of miscarriage. This time I'm going to go for an ERPC, I can't bear to wait for it to happen naturally and wouldn't do the pessary again

Good luck with whatever you decide, it's such a horrible decision to make. I hope you are ok x
