Hello. I had a miscarriage about 2 weeks ago after trying to get pregnant for a long time. I have just been told by my consultant that I have an abnormal uterus known as a Unicornuate uterus. Does anyone have any information on this or has anyone been in this situation? I will be having further scans but they have said while there should be no problem with me becoming pregnant my chances of a miscarriage are much higher although around 50% in this situation do give birth to healthy babies.

Sorry to hear your sad news, I have heard of this before, though I think it's fairly rare.

If it's any comfort at least now it has been diagnosed you can be assured to get very thorough care and check ups in subsequent pregnancies.

I hope someone will come across this who can offer more advice.
x

oh, and perhaps try putting it into google..you may come across some information, though be careful that it's coming from a validated source as the internet can be full of rubbish!

Sorry to hear this Debz. How are you feeling?

debz6108 · 25/07/2006 18:33

Thanks for the responses. I'm ok I guess still trying to take it in. I've done some searches on the web but most of what I have found is mean't for medical professionals and is difficult to understand. Although I have just come across one website started by someone who has this, so I'll see what I can find there.

sorry to hear about your m/c- don't really know what to say but i have a bicornuate uterus which was diagnosed during an emergency csec at 33 weeks with my dd, luckily she survived but has cp.i also have a ds aged 2.5 years who was born at 38 weeks(but i was on rest from 30 weeks)and the one day i bent down to help dd....bingo 2 mins later my waters broke and he was born 10 hours later(another emergency csec)
during my second pregnancy i was closely monitored at the hospital and found that generally saw the same specialist who was brilliant-when the time comes and you find that you are pregnant again-go in and talk to someone early on for them to know about you..your fears..and your hopes...
sorry if i have waffled on but best wishes for the future xx
ps:don't read the next bit if squeamish
(oh and i was like a prize sample during my 2nd csec with the specialist driving to get there even at 2am and a group of students all being called in-dh says they tossed my bits out on the top of my belly and all had a good luck)

chatee · 28/07/2006 20:58

oops should say look...

jud2905 · 14/08/2006 17:08

HI

like chatee I was also diagnosed with bicornuate uterus aged 18 after various gynae probs. Was also told up to 60% chance of misagrriage and 70% chance of delivering prematurely. Now have to beautiful boys age 7 (born 6 weeks early) and 2 (born 4 weeks early). 2nd delivery by emergency section and like chatee had all unsundry in theatre having a good look afterwards! The best is you know and you can prepare which make it easier

Hello Debz,

I am so sorry that you have suffered a miscarriage, I hope my story will help you to look to the future and see that it possible to have baby.

I have got a unicornuate uterus.
It was discovered when I was 34 weeks pregnant with my son., I was told that I would have to have a c-section by week 36. My son Billy was born, healthy and weighed 7.6 pounds!

I have since had a baby girl who was also delivered by c-section. I have been preganant 3 times and each time during the 8th or 9th week, I bleed very heavily for 4 or 5 days, it was so heavy I thought I had miscarried. Each time I had a scan afterwards and I was still pregnant.

I think every unicornuate uterus is different, and there no definate stats that relate to this condition.

I had a 3D scan in Harley street after my son was born, as I was informed that if you have uni or a bi cornuate uterus there is a slight chance you only have 1 kidney. I had 2, and was also told that I had an extra fallopian tube!

I hope that this helps and please let me know if you need more info.

hello debz

i know its a bit late but sorry about your news.
i feel very fortunate not to of suffered a misscarage myself , i do however have a unicornuate uterus
i found out about 5 years ago after not particulary trying for a baby but not not trying if you know what i mean for 2 years
at the time it was a shock but it certainly explained a few things
i also have the added problem of PCOS which meant that my limited fertility was now in single figures
it was unsafe for me to try IVF as i have a high BP and that was just agrivated by any hormonal intervention
we were on our way down the adoption route but felt we had to stop as we were basicly told that we had little chance of getting a baby in our area as were were both white and there just wernt any we were so disapointed

we basicaly gave up all hope of haveing a baby to love.
we were then told by some very good friends that had been praying for us that 3 things had to occur befor i would become pregnant no1 i had to pass my driving test no2 we had to get the house sorted well the building work done and no3 they had to move up to the village nearer us we found out 8 weeks after they had moved that i was pregnant.

i had also self emposed a 4th condition i had to lose 2 stone i was 3 pound away from my target when we found out and i had to stop

things havent been easy and my BP is starting to rise and i dont think it will be long before i am admited to hospital but i am 29 weeks and 3 day pregnant and cant wait to hold our mircle baby.

as for information the only stuff i can find is from forum sites like this and a very small amount in books and info sites most of it is american the only advise i can give is find a good consultant when you do become pregnant they can make all the difference i like mine and most of her team she actually read all my records and even though she didnt know much she went away and found out as much as she could so that she could awnser my questions . it might be werth you asking your doctor or consulant i guess you might be under a gynacologist by now if they can find out more for you.

with UU it isnt that that causes the infertility problems it is the other stuff eg PCOS endomitioses and that sort of thing also the posible little bit of the other side that didnt grow properly though i have read that if that is what the problem is an operation can be done to remove the duff part (if you get pregnant in this bit it is like haveing an eptopic) i hope some of this might of been of use there is more info now than 5 years ago
