Hi,
Found out last week I was pregnant, shocked but over the moon. The happiness was short lived as I started bleeding on saturday morning with pretty bad cramps, still bleeding and cramping although nothing but blood has come out (sorry if tmi). Spoke to GP this morning and he said cramping is normally the sign of a miscarriage, and it will happen soon. He's booked me in for a scan tomorrow, which I'm dreading.
I dont know how many weeks I am as I apparantly wasn't ovulating due to thyroid problems my consultant told me. I think I was about from 4 - 7 weeks.
Is the scan an ultrasound like when your pregnant ?
I have 3 wonderful children and although they are unaware, it's them that have got me through this weekend :)
Thanks

sorry to hear this Sad

yes the scan is an ultrasound

be prepared that if you are only 4 weeks pg they may not be able to tell anything anyway and you will have to go back in a cople of weeks.

BettySpaghetti · 08/05/2006 09:29

Think its also fair to warn you that the ultrasound may be an internal one. They use a "wand" as it gives a more accurate scan in the early stages of pregnancy.

I had an internal scan when I miscarried at around 7/8 wks.

myermay · 08/05/2006 09:30

no experience to add but just to say, hope all goes ok

Wisp · 08/05/2006 09:34

Thanks everyone, I'll be going on my own as DH will have to take the day off and look after the children at home. Im more worried what they are going to say ! and dreading having to have any medical intervention if it doesn't come out ! :(

Hi Wisp ..I'm really sorry. Like to add that likelyhood is of an internal ultrasound....totally undignified but should be quick as they can locate everything easier. And something else which I will add although its not too pleasant....after my second miscarriage the scan showed that there was an intact sac but no baby..when I asked where it was they said that I could have reabsorbed it. This totally shocked me so I thought it better that I share that with you incase they say the same. Good luck. Its totally miserable but you do get through it. :(

Wisp · 08/05/2006 09:50

Thanks, its good to know in advance so I can prepare myself mentally for what they might say.
Suprisingly although this pregnancy was very wanted, I havn't been as bad as I thought. Had a little cry when the bleeding started, I just see it as it wasn't the right time, and we were meant to have 3!
DH had a vasectomy a few weeks back, and we said before he had it - lets leave it to fate to decide if we have 4, and well..fate decided !
There's a sadness, but like a said when I first posted, my children are the ones making it better. :)

bramblina · 08/05/2006 12:04

Wisp I'm so sorry.
As bettyspaghetti said it may be an internal one, but they will probably give an external first, the internal ones can pick up more, ie from 8wks and earlier. I had one and found it very unpleasant and a little uncomfortable.
You may not need surgery for the intervention you mentioned, when I mc'd at 14 wks I was given 3 options- 1, leave it to nature which may take a lot longer but meant no treatment, 2, a course of pessary & oral tablet, then back in to hsop 48 hrs later for the same again, morphine and dihydracodein (sp) and expected blood loss or 3, a D&C. I chose option 2. I'll tell you what happened if you want to know. Not too bad don't worry but not the best thing to imagine if you don't want to know. With my next 3 mc's I chose option 1 and this worked better, thogh these were at 11, 6 & 5 wks.
Sorry for your loss again.

FirstNikki · 08/05/2006 15:25

Wisp - So sorry to hear your Sad news. I know you say you are coping with it due to your children but take of yourself. I had 2 "natural" mc the 2nd was going to be ERPC but the night before it all happened naturally so can't comment on the other methods. Best wishes to you and the scan is nothing to worry about more emotional because of the loss.

Take Care x

Northerner · 08/05/2006 15:32

Wisp, so sorry to hear this. I misacrried a few weeks ago, and it is a sad experience.

Like you, my 4 year old ds kept me going. Squeeze them all extra tight tonight.

Take care
xx

Wisp · 08/05/2006 16:47

Thank you all so much ! :)
Northerner - I'm sorry to hear that you've been through it too.
I have a scan booked at a gynae unit at Gloucester Royal on Wednesday.I need to take a urine sample, and have blood taken there, plus a scan.
With regards to my options, I really don't know which is best- I just want it all over ASAP so I can get back to normal without this on my mind all the time.
Then we are going to have a holiday together- which is what I really need!!
Thanks again !

Wisp sorry to hear this - would like to add that I had the ERPC op and it was fine. Over really quickly and the staff were really kind. In the same situation I would have the op again. I was lucky as I had no bleding afterwards - think most women do bleed for a few days!

cupcakes · 08/05/2006 17:06

so sorry to hear this.
I had a mc in March and I decided to wait for it to happen naturally - it took a week and it seemed forever. However, when I did start to bleed I was pleased I had waited as I felt better for going through the process at home, with dh. Other people of course prefer the security of it happening in hospital - the blood loss and the passing of the sac can be frightening. Pain wise it was like a very heavy period or a bit like early labour but I found it manageable with pain killers (although they told me not to use ibuprofen as it can cause clotting - I think, but best check).
I had another scan afterwards where the checked that the mc was complete.
Hope it goes as well as it can for you.

cupcakes · 08/05/2006 17:09

one other thing - even if you do intend to do it naturally you may be best to get onto the list for an eprc asap. I decided to wait but then after a few days of frustration asked for an erpc to be told it could be another week to 10 days.

Wisp · 08/05/2006 17:23

Thanks cupcakes, I'll remember that!!
Ideally I'd like to be at home, but I'm open to
erpc if things drag on..roll on wednesday!

Sorry Wisp,
Just one thing to be aware of as you are not sure of your dates youmay not get a final answer on Wed. You may well have to wait another week to see if no growth has occured. With my first mc it was a month between my first bleed and actually everything being "over".

Unless the staff are very sure that there is no hope you are unlikley to be offered a d&c etc.

Just thought it best to warn you that things might take longer.

I hope you have some real answers on Wed.

Debbsy · 09/05/2006 08:06

so sorry wisp

HellKat · 09/05/2006 08:17

So sorry to hear this Wisp.
I've had both erpc's and natural mc's. There are advantages of both and it's totally down to personal choice.
I wish you all the best hun xxxxxxxxx

diddle · 09/05/2006 12:10

Wisp · 11/05/2006 15:29

Just an update, went yesterday and preg test was negative,no further scans needed or anything. Stopped bleeding now, so can put the whole thing behind me. Going on a camping holiday in 5 weeks so can't wait. Thanks everyone.

Glad there won't be any prolonged hospital visits for you. The holiday sounds an excellent thing to help draw a line underneath it. Hope you have a great time.
