What to expect from a GP appointment?

Hello all. I should be about 6 weeks pregnant but I think I may have started miscarrying yesterday. I woke at 4am bleeding and with very mild cramps and put on a pad and went back to bed. An hour later I got up and the pad was nearly soaked so changed it. I went to see the GP later that morning and she seemed like she wanted to get the whole appointment over with as quickly as possible. She did phone the local EPU but I think because of the cramping they said it was probably a mc and I shouldn't come in.
The bleeding by this point had however changed to an end of period like spotting which lasted for about 24 hours. I only really had heavy bleeding for about an hour and had mild cramping for a few hours (I've been having cramps on and off throughout the pregnancy).
I didn't really feel like I knew what was going on so I phoned the EPU and spoke to a really nice lady who said it didn't definitely sound like a mc and I should just wait and do a pregnancy test in 2 weeks or call if things change. She asked me if the GP had examined me or taken blood and sounded surprised when I said no.
So, I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I have been feeling sick today and my breasts are still tender though maybe less full (I am poking them so much I am confusing myself). Also, should my GP have examined me and taken bloods? I got the impression she had decided I was having a MC before I came in (I had spoken to her v briefly in the morning when I made the appointment). As she was phoning the EPU she said she was using me as a test case as there had been some discussion about earlier scans but that they would probably say no.
Sorry this is so long. I feel I am clutching at straws. I would like to know either way and a RL friend suggested calling the EPU and saying I wanted a scan. I'm a bit scared to do it though and scared of the result if they say yes.

Thanks for the reply - I appreciate it. The thing is while I may be slightly burying my head in the scan that is by going along with appropriate medical advice. I feel like I am going to have to be really bolshy to get one and I don't have the stomach for it. If they said I needed one I would go along with it no problem but they don't even seem to be suggesting it for me.

Tells you what you should be able to expect. Fingers crossed everything works out for you.

Phone EPU. I've had bleeding in all four pregnancies - twice ended in miscarriage, twice was fine. It is soul destroying not knowing. A scan will either put your mind at rest that it's ok or if the pregnancy is not progressing allow you to start dealing with that.
If you do go, get there early if it's a first come, first served set up - there are many many women who have similar scares in early pregnancy, it will be busy. Take someone along for moral support.
It's very true that going along for a scan won't change the outcome - it will either be ok or it won't, but it can make a huge difference to how you feel over the next few weeks.
Hope you get good news.

The other suggestion is go back to the GP and ask them to do HCG bloods twice, two days apart. That would give you an idea whether the pregnancy is continuing.

Thanks all. I will see how tomorrow goes and call the EPU.
