ERPC tomorrow - what to expect at the hospital?

Hi - I discovered on Tuesday that I've had a mmc at 10 and am going in for an erpc tomorrow. I only had a brief chat with my consultant on Tuesday, really just wanted to get out of there as you can imagine, and have read up on the options so happy to go with this. It's all been arranged quickly which is what I wanted, but basically I told him this morning I wanted to come in tomorrow and got a text late afternoon telling me to come in at 9 am and nil by mouth from midnight and that was it.

I'm sure he'll explain everything in the morning but just wondered if any of you ladies on here who have sadly been through the same thing could give me an idea of what will happen and what I should tak in with me tomorrow? I'm rather underwhelmed by the information I've been given to say the least, but just want to get it over with. I know what the procedure involves, it's more what will happen when I arrive and afterwards in the hospital...

Thank you very much x

Sorry to hear about your loss Sad

I had an ERPC about 4 weeks ago after a MMC at 10.5 weeks. I was changed into a gown, all jewellery, glasses etc taken off, taken into theatre and given the general. You have to sign something first to acknowledge the complications (eg. scarring of the womb). The whole thing lasted around an hour I think and it felt as though I'd had a lovely and much needed sleep. I did have a little cramping pain for around 15 minutes afterwards but then wasn't sore at all. My bleeding was very light after that for a few days, but I know some people bleed for longer and slightly heavier so they'll advise you to keep your eye on that and if it is still heavy go back to EPU for another scan to check everything's out.

I was kept in overnight because I'd had MC complications prior to the ERCP where I needed a few units of blood but I don't believe you'll be staying in.
I'd take a baskic overnight bag just in case with things to refresh yourself afterwards, change of clothes etc that whoever is with you will have to look after.

I felt relieved not to be bleeding any more after the op and it was all very straight forward.

PLease ask if you have any more questions and good luck.

Thank you so much, that's exactly the kind of thing I wanted to know, I feel a lot calmer now. DP will be coming with me, will he be able to stay or will he have to leave me and come back?

I'm very sorry you've been through this too.

Hi - really sorry to hear that you've been through this.

I had a mmc at 9 weeks, about 3 weeks ago. I had an ERPC the day after I found out.

I was in hospital for 8am and admitted at 9am onto the ward. After I had gone through the forms etc with the (lovely) nurse and had a chat with the anaethetist, I changed into a gown and then the nurse placed some pills at the neck of my uterus (uncomfortable but not bad) and I had to lay in bed for an hour while they did their work - softening up the uterus to make it easier to open. I was then wheeled into theatre and given a general. Afterwards I was very sleepy and quite crampy but otherwise fine. I bled quite heavily in hospital but the nurses said it was completely normal. I was home for about 3pm.

I bled on and off for about 2 weeks afterwards but had no more pain. I was given strong painkillers to take home but didn't need them.

Take a dressing gown, slippers etc and something to read if you want. I don't know if you have anyone going in with you, but I was on my own (husband had to work) and I felt really well looked after.

As goofymum also says, feel free to ask anything, and hope all goes well for you.

Just seen that you will have your DP with you - there was another lady having an erpc at the same time as me and she had her DP with her all the time (except in theatre)

My DP went home and came back afterwards, they called him from recovery to say it had finished. I don't think every hospital would do that though so your DP could just wait in the relatives area or in the hospital canteen, the op itself isn't too long.
