I'm still here, and need some more advice (sorry!)

I've been lurking here and had a couple of threads about a month ago. I started bleeding a month ago, have had several appointments with EPU and was confirmed as having a "failed pregnancy" 3 weeks ago. Bleeding stopped by Thursday last week, I had a scan but it showed the sac still there, same size as 3 weeks ago.

So, I've been told to go back tues to be given a pill, then back on thurs for a pessary and will be in for the day waiting for the medication to help my body "expel" (hate that word) what's left.

I have no idea what it will be like, and in all honesty, I'm a bit scared. Does anyone know, if I don't do this, will what's left come away with my next period? If so, am I at risk by leaving it that long (risk of infection/affecting fertility, etc? This is my first mc, second pg, I'm 25)

Sorry to be here looking for advice AGAIN, but everyone here has been so nice so far Smile

TIA

I'm sorry it's still ongoing. I had an ERPC so have no advice unfortunately but didn't want you to go unanswered. And don't apologise for asking for advice, I've bored everyone here rigid with my tale since January.

I would imagine that they would expect the remaining tissue to come away fairly swiftly with this medication. If it doesn't then they will probably think again. If it's been three weeks already I would say they wouldn't want to leave you much longer in case of infection.

I am only guessing though, I might be talking bollocks.

Hi,

I recenty had a mc, which was incomplete. Had to go into hospital for a day, and was given a pessary, then a few hours later some tablets, to help 'expel' what was left. It didn't work. I got some cramps, and some very light bleeding, but had to go back last Tuesday for a ERPC.

I was given the option of waiting for my next period, but TBH i just wanted it all over and done with asap.

I don't think it would do any harm to leave it, or else they wouldn't advise it, iyswim?

Sorry you have to go through this.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry you've both had to go through that. I was offered D&C (I think, tbh she just said I could "go to theatre").

Dee I know what you mean about wanting it over, I'm getting fed up now (for want of a better phrase) of just being in limbo and not able to do anything about it.
I was told if the meds didn't work I'd be taken to theatre the following morning.

I'm back in Tues so think I'll have a long chat with the nurse, she wasn't particulaly informative TBH, she seemed to assume I knew all the procedures etc.

Hope you're both feeling better soon, so sorry for your losses.

Ok, ignore me. Dee (unfortunately) has experience. I hope it's over soon for you both. It's bad enough when it's over quickly x

Hi OP - sorry you are going through this. I have had 4 mc's and with my last mc I opted for medical management. TBH, it was the least traumatic physically, but most traumatic mentally.

With the procedure, about 95% of women pass the sac withtin 4 hours, but a small percentage don't pass anything within that timeframe. I fortunately passed everything within 4 hours when I went back for the pessaries. I was given a suppository for pain relief and an anti sickness tablet at the start and then was offered co-codamol and ibuprofen every 4 hours later, so I had no pain at all - just a heavy feeling in my stomach. I recommend asking for as much pain relief as possible at the start - even if they dont offer it, tell them you want it.

Try walking around after you've inserted the tablets, as it helps things along.

The reason why I say it is traumatic mentally, is because I passed the sac into a pan and saw it. I had to close my eyes whilst I waited for the nurse to come and take it. That image stayed with me for a few weeks afterwards. Physically, I recovered quickly with minimal bleeding.
Also, they give you a week's course of antibiotics to help deter infections. If you have smelly discharge or pain, heavy feeling or heavy fresh bleeding after the procedure, then definitely go back to hospital as you may have retained products.

I hope everything works out for you, it's a very scary and heartbreaking thing to go through. Make sure you take your partner or a friend or relative along with you to spend the day with in hospital, as you will need the support. xx

Hi, I think milkyway's version is spot on to be honest, although i had the same thing happen quite a few years ago but as she said it is a horrible thing to go through and you are usually given a room to yourself in which to spend the day with your own private toilet/shower, i'd ask in advance though if you are allowed to have a partner theire though, it wasnt made clear to me at all and i took along a friend who had taken the day off work to come with me only to be told by a very angry nurse not to be so stupid and i couldnt have anyone in the room with me... If you would prefer to let natura take its course though then you should demand you would prefer this after allits your body, im so sorry your going through this though, i dont think any women should have to suffer in this way, goodluck xx
