Do I need a colposcopy post-miscarriage?

I went to A+E about the fact I thought I had miscarried last Sunday (there's another thread about that) and the doctor told me I was going for a scan. I assumed this meant ultrasound but I just looked at the bit of paper he gave to my partner and it said "colposcopy suit" so I googled it, and needless to say DID NOT like what I found!

It's my assumption that the only reason to check whether or not the cervix is dilated is to see if you ARE miscarrying currently. I know I've miscarried - I passed the embryo last night. Do I still need a colposcopy? What benefit would it bring to find out if my cervix is dilated? Can I refuse it if it's not necessary? I was under the impression I was having an ultrasound scan to make sure there was no fetal tissue left. I would be much more comfortable with than than this supposedly pointless microscope being pushed inside of me for no good reason.

Is there any reason for me to have this? I really don't want to. Not only because of the procedure but I really did not like the doctor who I saw in minor injuries (a gynecologist specialist, I've just discovered, brought in to minor injuries to see me). Those reasons are in my other thread too - he was horribly insensitive. Do I have to have this thing?

Thanks,
K x

When are you due to go? Is there any chance the colposcopy suit is just the place where they do the ultrasound? Clutching at straws but I had treatment for a gynaecological thing in the colposcopy clinic of my hospital, but it wasn't anything to do with my cervix. Sorry, not much help Sad

I rang up the hospital today to double check my appointment time, and they told me it wasn't a scan. Do you know if I need this now that I have actually miscarried?

I was due to go this morning but I slept in. Meh. Can't think of any good reason why I should call up and arrange another one. Might see my midwife and see if she can book an ultrasound for me.

Is there an early pregnancy unit near you Kazine?
If you phoned them and said u have mc, they might arrange a scan for you to check things out. I understand your reluctance to have further interference, but it can be handy to have a scan to check the mc is complete - prob not till all bleeding has stopped though.

Hi,

I have had 6 natural m/c and never been scanned after.
I always call the EPU and they are happy once I've given them the TMI.
I m/c very early on so there is never much of an embryo followed by 3-4 days bleed.

Just to give some hope. it took 16 months to conceive after the birth of my son (m/c) a few months for the next 2 then the next 3 were consecutive months!
Still trying!! I must be mad, 39 soon....last m/c was November,

Lots of luck to you all.

Thank you Crystal. I'm going to arrange an ultrasound instead of a colposcopy.

Hi Kazine,
I'm sorry about all that horrible experiences you've been through. Especially the insensitive doctor in time like that.
I'm going to Calposcopy every 6 months as my smear tests are not all clear and there are some cervix cells that need to be viewed regularly to make sure they are not changing into something sinister.
The only reason I can think of why the doc is sending you there is that maybe he did a smear test and the results show some mild changes? Did he do a smear test or did he look inside you?
Mind you, the calposcopy is not anything bad, they don't push any microscope inside you. They just open your vagina with this umbrella thing and have a look at your cervix through the microscope which is outside.
Good luck with everything. Ask if you need any more info. x

In response to your question, no he didn't take a smear, or do any test like that. He probably just wanted to see if my cervix was dilated, to tell if I was miscarrying, or he was a pervert :|.

Thanks for your reply.
