BFP today but in lots of pain, no bleeding-what is this?

I've had 2 MC this year already at 8 and 9 weeks last one in August.
We have been ttc but a bit half heartedly. I was due my period today and woke up in the night with cramping pains. Took some paracetamol and filled my hot water bottle and tried to get some sleep but the pain was nagging away all morning.
I did a pregnancy test kind of to rule it out (I've no symptoms) and lo and behold it was +ve. I even cracked out my clearblue I'd been saving up to confirm it and it says 3 weeks pregnant.
I can't be happy though because I'm still in pain. I'm so worried its ectopic. I went to my GP and to be fair the pain had gone off a lot by then. She examined me internally which hurt like hell and really brought the pain back but she said she can't feel anything which is good??
She thinks its too early on for the pain to be from an ectopic.
She didn't suggest a scan just wants me to go for a hcg blood test tomorrow.
I'm not in excruciating pain now but there is just a nagging ache there.
What on earth is this? Can anyone help?
I don't feel its such an emergency I should go to A&E and I don't know if I would get to see anyone helpful there.

I had terrible pain for a couple of days in early pregnancy, like really bad period pain and I couldn't sit still.

I also had a small amount of bleeding and was sent for a scan, I suspect to check for ectopic due to the pain although this wasn't mentioned at the time.

The scan showed a uterine pregnancy and dated me at just under 6 weeks and after that all was well (result was ds).

In my case I assume that it was implantation - trust your instincts though.

sleepysox · 18/10/2010 20:33

It could be implantation pain. I had terrible pain for the first few weeks with DS1 and bled a bit too. I thought I was miscarrying, but wasn't. Weirdly enough, when I did miscarry other pregnancies I didn't have any pain initially.

Is there any way you can book to have an early scan? Is there an early pregnancy unit at your local hospital? At our one you can self refer once you are 5 weeks pg.

HTH

mamadoc · 18/10/2010 20:42

Perhaps it is implantation then. I have never had it before.
I hardly dare to hope for any good outcome.
The GP didn't offer a scan and I guess it would be too early to see anything. I think that's why she suggested the blood tests to see if hcg is going up.

I had this with my first mc, second pregnancy. The pain was NOTHING to do with the mc, as that came later, but it was around the time of my period. This time (also ended in mc) I had really bad lower backache. Again, nothing to do with mc as that came later.

mamadoc · 19/10/2010 11:36

Pain is almost gone today and now I feel I've made a fuss over nothing. After the last two MCs I was always going to be anxious but now this pain as well I have no idea how I will get through. I'm just waiting for it all to go wrong at any second.

Hello,

Please go to A&E and get checked. Even if the pain has gone. If you have pain and a positive test there is a chance it could be ectopic, and in that case you need to do everything you can to get it ruled out before considering any other option. This is because the risks to your health are so great if it is left untreated. Please go to A&E and make a big fuss and insist on getting scanned. GP's dont know too much about ectopics (you need a scan, an internal exam wont find anything at all), go to hospital where the protocol is for you to be scanned and investigated until ec can definitely be ruled out. They are also not supposed to base any kind of diagnosis based on what you think your dates are (because you could be wrong) a scan is the only way to safely rule out ep. Be careful with the HCG level too because if it is EP it will be low, but if it is low they might say that the pregnancy is too early to be detecting an ep!

Of course after two mc's you are going to be anxious, but you still deserve good medical care and you have a real need get checked out here. I know its probably the last thing you feel like doing, but please dont take any risks with your health, just show up at A&E and describe the pain to them.

I've called the EPU now because I did get worried that maybe the GP isn't giving me good advice and they said exactly the same thing: because it is so very early nothing would be seen on a scan so I need to have the serial blood tests. (I've had one today). They say they will call tomorrow with the result and a plan.
They said go to A&E if the pain is bad or goes to my shoulder tip or I have bleeding or feel faint. None of that has happened so I suppose I just wait until then although it is very hard not knowing.

Hi MamaDoc

I'm glad you called the EPU I really think it is worth getting help from every angle until an EP is 100% ruled out.

Are you very sure about your period dates? Is there a chance that you could have ovulated earlier than you think and be more pregnant than you originally thought? If you have any doubts whatsoever make them known, because it looks like they are taking dates into account (even though they shouldnt be!)

The serial blood tests sounds very reassuring, are you booked for the next one 48 hours after the first?

Shoulder tip pain with an ectopic would mean that you are experiencing internal bleeding after a rupture, you really dont want to wait for things to get that far! Go straight to A&E or the EPU if you have pain that isnt sorted out by a paracetomol, have diarrhoea, increased heart rate or feel sick. Or if you feel that there is any possibility that you could be about 4/5 weeks pregnant, in which case a transvaginal ultrasound should be done asap.

I do hope that this all turns out to be nothing and you can begin enjoying your BPF, but it is so worth doing everything you can to check it is not EP first.

do let us know how you get on xxxx

mamadoc · 20/10/2010 20:39

The result of the 1st hcg blood test was back today and was >3000 which apparently is a strong positive and means they can scan so I am having an internal scan (oh joy) on Fri am.
I have been to work today so am not in lots of pain but still a bit of discomfort low down on L. side.
Still just playing a waiting game.

Hi mamadoc, I am so glad you are getting monitored properly. Push and make sure they do the second HCG test 48 hours after the first. Comparing the levels will give you are really clear idea if this a "healthy" pregnancy. (the numbers should double)

Here is an HCG chart if you are interested
here one level on its own still gives pretty vague information however over 3000 puts you at 21 or more DPO, is this later than you thought? Dont forget to mention it to the hospital staff if you are in anyway unsure of your dates.

By the way, I have had internal scans like this a lot, they really dont hurt and arent anywhere near as uncomfortable as a smear test. You dont even need to get in the stirups, just lie on a table and bend you legs so dont worry.

How is your pain? Are you feeling OK?

I so hope things work out well in the end. FX for you xxxxx

mamadoc · 22/10/2010 17:56

I had the internal scan today which was nowhere near as bad as I thought: Not painful and not even particularly embarrassing.
It is cautious good news. There is an interuterine pregnancy, very small as expected, just a sac. Its too early to say if any baby is developing.
The pain was probably from the corpus luteum cyst on my ovary which was quite big apparently.
Still no bleeding and the pain is hardly there at all now most of the time.
So on the one hand I have to be thankful that it is not ectopic which was my big concern but on the other hand now I'm just back to my baseline high anxiety state after the last two MCs. The midwife was all jolly and encouraging and 'we'll see you back to deliver the baby' but I just can't be that hopeful.
Thanks for all your support to anyone who's posted or followed this thread especially MummyAbroad.

oh lovely news!!!! I'm so pleased for you!!
Of course you are going to be really anxious after two mc's, totally understandable. At least you can put your mind at rest about the pain now. Is the cyst gone then?

Are you on any kind of support thread? I can really recommend the lovely ladies on these threads, they are tremendously helpful xxx
