Aspirin or not?

Hi all

I've had 3 MCs in total, have one lovely DS (he was the 3rd pregnancy, so one MC since he was born). Have just done a test today and there was a faint positive line... so...I think I am setting off down that road again...

Am going to go to the GP asap but wanted to ask opinions here too.

Should I go down the 75mg of aspirin a day route or not? I have not had any tests on why I've had the MCs so no idea if I have a blood clotting thing or not. Can the aspirin do any harm if I don't need it?

Thanks in advance

First: Congratulations! I hope you make it through the next eight months with relatively few worries and that you can enjoy your pregnancy.

I don't know that my answer will be particularly helpful but I have also had my share of miscarriages and it was a consultant that suggested that a low dose of aspirin might be helpful and wouldn't be harmful.

Prior to my last pregnancy (which sadly ended with another mmc at 20 weeks), I would have said take the aspirin with no worries. I do credit the low dose of aspirin with dd2's successful pregnancy.

With my last pregnancy I had a condition called placenta previa and the aspirin led to small bleeds that may actually have caused the miscarriage.

This condition is extremely rare but if I had not been in Switzerland where scans are done routinely at every antenatal appointment, I may not have survived the experience.

Be aware that there are always risks with whatever choice you make and do tell your midwife if you decide to take the aspirin.

What is the theory behind taking aspirin?

If you've had 3 mcs, does that mean your GP can carry out tests? There must be a test to see if you have a clotting issue.
I'm grateful (though disappointed) to see what you put Lunatic, I'd been thinking of taking aspirin if there's a "next time", but that doesn't sound too good.
Good luck SA.

Thanks for that LF.

Congrats :) I would say take the advice by your doctor. I took baby aspirin from getting a positive test but only as I was advised to after having positive results for Hughes syndrome (sticky blood). I also injected Heparin and had a cervical stitch. DS was fine but i did have bleeding into the sac which I have no idea if was related to the blood thinners. I am very sorry for your losses, it is so hard to repeatedly miscarry, i lost 4 at 6, 11, 20, 23 weeks. Happily I managed to have 5 living children (4 pregnancies but one was twins) in between my losses, and I have several medical conditions that all cause miscarriages and late losses, so hope that gives you some hope for the future.

Thanks all, for the congratulations, and for sharing your stories, and for the advice.

I have a GP appt but not till next week so am not sure what to do in the interim...these early days are so terrifying and impossible...

I've been out of the UK so hence no tests, plus the 3 MCs weren't in a row, so apparently that means they don't count so much. I don't know...

I do have a clotting problem and was on heparin injections throughout my pregnancy - DS arrived safely. I would strongly advise you to ask for tests to be done to look for a clotting problem - it may not be this, but if so it is (relatively) easily resolved by giving you appropriate blood thinners. Aspirin is only partly effective so it would really be best to investigate properly.

My MCs weren't in a row either but they still diagnosed repeated MC and tested me although they mainly tested me after the 20 wk miscarriage and found the clotting thing. 3 MC (or even 2) should be investigated even if not in a row, I would push for tests, good luck.
