diagnosed with fibroids

I'm 42, have been having horrendous bleeding, was referred to the hospital & diagnosed with several small fibroids but as the uterus lining was not very thick, the fibroids would be benign. I have been prescribed norethisterone in the short term, but longer term, could the fibroids become malignant or is benign tissue always likely to remain benign in the uterus? I have been advised to have a mirena, but I did try this 5 years ago and bled constantly. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. I did have a fibrocystic breast lump removed a couple of years ago which was very frightening and I don't want to go to that place again!

Fibroids are very common- 50% of women have 1 or more.

They are an overgrowth of the msucle wall. As far as I know they never become malignant. Cancer of the uterus is limited to the lining usually and not associated with fibroids.

Surprised a Mirena made you bleed as they usually stop all periods.

If you fibroids get very big they can be taken out, or you could have a hysterectomy, but they shrink at the menopause anyway.

If I were you I'd try the Mirena again.

Agree with purplepeony - I had a large fibroid removed following months of dreadful bleeding - I had a Mirena at the time and my GP knew it wasn't to blame for the bleeding so I saw consultant - had all exploratory tests done and as the fibroid was so big I had it removed. Day case at hospital - no need for overnight stay - no trouble at all. A bit crampy after but eventually all settled down and I actually went on to have DS2 a few months later. Had Mirena put back in as soon as I could as I am a huge fan - Have had one for nearly 15 years now and am one of the lucky ones with no bleeding at all. Don't worry about them being cancerous - they are incredibly common but as yours cause you trouble I would push for removal. Hope this helps.

I had to go back to my Dr's today as I have been bleeding heavily for 20 days. I am absolutely washed out - it is so debilitating. Anyway, Dr suggested that the best course of action would be i)have an injection to begin the menopause (which has the contra-indication of brittle bones etc or ii)have a hysterectomy. As I said earlier, I'm 42 and don't relish the thought of either. Help please, I'm gutted & quite tearful, I feel totally confused and that I don't like either option. Carrying on as I am now is not an option either. On holiday, I was bleeding so heavily I was the only person sitting at the side of the swimming pool. Any suggestions please??

is this dr a gynae?
If not ask for a referral to one.
ask about Mirena coil or endometrial ablation.

Fibroid tumours in the uterus are sensitive to oestrogen in the body. The more estrogens substances in your body the more the fibroids will grow. Detoxifying the liver, nutrition, lifestyle changes and exercise will help the body to get rid of the excess oestrogen and other toxins in the body that may be interfering with your balance.
