I'm 48, have been having irregular periods for about 9 mnths. Did a home test about six months ago and it indicates I'm peri menopausal. Didn't go to GP as no real problems, just curious.

Used to be v. regular then started missing/longer cycles, very light bleeding compared to usual etc.

Started bleeding very heavily 1st March and havent stopped since. Flooding to the point that even with a mooncup or super plus extra tampon combined with a night time st, I'm soaked within 30 mins/an hour.

Have been to GP 3 times; and have waited two weeks for an "emergency" hospital referral.

Have been prescribed Tranexamic & Mefenamic acid, which have slowed down the bleeding but not stopped it.

I'm so wet/sore/burnt/ down below that I've got creams etc for that. I've also developed a kidney infection and am on antibiotics for that.

Am seriously worn out and worried.

Has anyone experienced similar.

Sorry this is so long.

This is not normal as you know.
Your Gp should refer you urgently to a gynae- any chance you could pay for a consultation privately and jump the queue?

Has your gp done any blood tests?

I think- but don't quote me- that they could prescribe progestrone to stop bleeding- ask?

friend of mine had it for constant spotting.

I'm sorry you're having such a bad time. I do remember having periods that were heavy for the first three days and then tailed off over the next four. I was using the largest tampons for overnight, with a sanitary pad as well! But they got less frequent and I only had two periods last year at age 51. I would say that they were definitely not as bad as yours, and there was no pain.

I am concerned that you will become anaemic, has the Dr given you any instructions about that? If you are bleeding so much I can't see how you can possibly function, you must spend all your time changing san pro and going out must be a nightmare. I am wondering if you might have fibroids, as they are known to cause excessive bleeding, but there is often pain as well.

I'd go back to the surgery and ask to see a different Dr, telling them everything that has happened, how it affects you on a daily basis. It's not fair that you should be left to suffer like this, lets face it, if you had a flesh wound that bled like that you'd be into A&E getting it sorted straight away. If you can afford it, I'd seriously consider a referral to a private gynaecologist for investigations because you will be seen so much sooner, especially for ultrasounds and things like that. You can still have other treatments done on the NHS if you want, but it speeds the diagnostic process up if some things are done privately.

I would also recommend using pads by Natracare or Nature, as they are much more comfortable against your sore bits, you can get them at Waitrose or independent health stores. I find a lot of the pads these days have a plastic top sheet which makes me sweat! But these others have a natural fibre topsheet which is very soft. (Natracare do maternity pads if you need something substantial)

Don't give up nagging the Dr, and do lay it on thick about just how bad things are. Good luck.

Haven't got any more advice than above - good advice from girlywhirly I think. Just wanted to give you lots of sympathy and particularly echo the anaemic bit - get yourself some iron tablets and insist on seeing a different gp as an emergency - so much blood loss is not good.

best of luck x

You are probably bleeding because you are not producing enough progesterone - (because you are menopausal).

If your gp is not prepared to prescribe you some progesterone and refer you urgently to gynaecologist, you really need to either see another GP asap.

I had this and was severely anaemic. My GP put me on progesterone tablets as an emergency measure, and referred me for urgent appt, I was fitted with a mirena coil within 2 weeks - no bleeding since.

purplepeony · 12/04/2010 17:51

as I said in my post, progesterone helps- can't be much of a GP if they don't know this!

Have you really told them in graphic detail how much misery this is causing you?
sometimes people post here but have not said half as much to their dr. sorry if you have

I hae spent the day on the 'phone to the Gp's (backwards and forwards).

Friday they took 4 vials of blood. They had trouble finding a vein. THAT'S BECAUSE I'VE GOT NON LEFT !!!!!!
If they want more blood; it's in my fucking pants.

The blood tests have come back.

I have normal liver function
I'm not anaemic
I have a high white cell count (despite/because taking anti biotics for the kidney infection ?).

I asked for an explanation and a private referral.

The GP asked me to apologise to his secretery 'cos I was rude.

I'm drawing conclusions from the blood test; but I asked him to fax them over.

But no progesterone?

BloomingFlowers · 24/04/2010 07:47

I eventually got to see a Consultant (privately).
She said that the "acid" tablets above were worse than useless; and immediately prescribed Progesterone.

The bleeding stopped on the 2nd day of taking them; I think it would have been sooner but she undertook a quite extensive set of biopsies there and then.

MN'ers diagnosed & prescribed far more effectively than any of the 3 GP's I saw !!!!

To stop bleeding (as I was) is such a tremendous relief. I have managed to get out of the hose for the first time in weeks, and managed to sleep through without having to constantly wake to stop flooding...

But I'm quite tired and worn out with it all. I'm taking iron and multi vitamin tablets in the hope that it boosts everything a little.

Many Thanks for all your help and advise.
