Periods gone haywire! Heavy bleed 2 weeks after last period. Help, please!

I am 48, and will be 49 in 3 months time. My last period came late, after 44 days, instead of around 28. It was lighter than normal. Then 2 weeks later, I started another period. I was only spotting lightly for 4 days, now since yesterday I am bleeding heavily, and clotting. Not at all normal for me. I also had sore, swollen breasts before this one started. The bleeding is making me feel dizzy and washed out. I was sweaty in bed last night. But apart from last night I haven't had flushes, or PMT mood symptoms.

I remember my mum started bleeding every 2 weeks, and that was when she was about 52. then she had to have a hysterectomy when she was 55, as by then she had lost weight and was anaemic.

My question is: do you think I need to go to the doctors?

I don't know Snowball, but snap. I've been having periods every three weeks for a couple of years now (I'm 45) but last month I missed one altogether. The next one was two weeks ago and yesterday I started again. I guess going to the docs is a good idea, but I suspect it is in the range of normal peri-menopausal stuff.

thanks for your reply Firstlady. this is a horrible business. It calmed down last night (the bleeding) but this morning it has been heavy again and painful. I've never had heavy periods and it scares me because I feel like I'm going to bleed to death. I need to go to Tesco's today but I'm not really feeling up to it. Pathetic, eh? What if I have this every two weeks? I think I will go to the doc's - at least for some reassurance.

You need to go to the drs. Ther are lots of treatments available including drugs for heavy periods. Hysterectomy is rarely used now for heavy bleeding- they can do other things. If you continue to bleed a lot you can become anaemic, so get it checked out.

Purplepeony, yes, I have decided I'd better go to the docs about it. Thanks for your reply. I'm a lot better today.
