thats it basically. I've been feeling hideous for the best part of each month for months on end. After having a couple of meltdowns recently I went back to the gp tonight and she is going to give me one of these and change my ad's again too.

So, what does it do for you? I really don't want to hear the negative stuff, I know some but I really need to hear the postives please. ta very much

thats more like it, just want to feel normal, not too much to ask really. A, back on the prozac from tomorrow too. I was on that, then changed to citalopram and now back again. By christmas I will be a new person, er, without a job lol

There was someone on here a little while ago who was complaining loads about her mirena coil, only to discover (when she had it taken out) that is wasn't the mirena that she had...

claricebeansmum · 01/10/2009 17:50

11 years of no periods
11 years of no pregnancies

No side effects at all

Furball · 01/10/2009 18:32

7.5 years - love it, love it, love it, full stop

How do people deal with periods every month, couldn't be doing with all that faff!

Applesgalore · 01/10/2009 18:43

I love mine too, I had intermittent bleeding for the first 4 or 5 months, more days than not, to be honest, but it was much lighter than my periods had been, it was fitted about last May, so have now had about a year of no periods, just occasional spotting, brilliant! No noticeable side effects for me, and no worries about forgetting to take it like the pill (really don't want to get PG again just now). People say best to get it fitted by Family Planning Dr rather than GP, as they do them far more often and therefore easily, mine was fitted at FP clinic and hardly felt a thing.

I always felt, well, the worst that can happen is that I have to have it taken out again.

DelGirl · 02/10/2009 10:22

Thanks for everyone's comments, they've helped, thanks. Having it done in 2 weeks time. We go away 2 weeks after that so I hope I won't be in too much bother by then? gawd! Started back on the prozac today so hopefully there'll be a big improvement in my mood by then too. Onwards and upwards.

Non-existant periods here too, plus I don't get PMT either.

differentnameforthis · 02/10/2009 10:33

My Mirena caused depression, weight gain, spots, terrible mood swings, bloating, insomnia & excruciating cramps (during which I almost dropped my 6 month old). I had an infection that 3 weeks worth of 3 different antibiotics eventually shifted. I had it out after 2 months, in March.

I now have horrendous period pains. And for the first time in all my ovulating years, painful ovulation. I never felt it before.

My dr has now advised that I never have a IUD as a contraception, because we do not know what damage it has done.

The hormone does not stay localised. And I think you should research it more, not just look for + stories!

DelGirl · 02/10/2009 11:27

Thank you, I do appreciate you taking the time to post. But, I have read experiences on here and no doubt, it will come with lots of bumf to read. I asked for positives, because for me, I have tried 3 different lots of hrt without success and so this is something new to try. Obviously one has to be aware of the side effects of course but i'm in a place where I have to try and stay positive. I don't want to be over anxious about having it as it may have an effect, albeit unconsciously.

OP posts:
jooseyfruit · 02/10/2009 13:29

differentnameforthis there are plenty of threads detailing the cons of a mirena. This wasn't what DelGirl asked for, and I'm sure she's done the research looking at the pro's and con's.
people tend to like focusing on the negative and like to have a good moan much more than sharing positive experiences imvvho.
saying that though, I'm sure if someone posted a thread asking only for the negative aspects of a mirena amid all the neg post's, someone would pop up and say "hang on, there are positives" which is what you were trying to do I'm sure.
I just don't think it was all that approriate given the op.

jooseyfruit · 02/10/2009 13:31

appropriate

differentnameforthis · 02/10/2009 13:43

I just wanted to point out that it isn't the wonderful cure all that the drs portray it to be.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that!

And I do think it is appropriate, seeing as the OP is on meds for depression & mirena can be a cause of depression.

I am also allowed to post anywhere, thank you!

jooseyfruit · 02/10/2009 14:05

"I just wanted to point out that it isn't the wonderful cure all that the drs portray it to be"

But we're not Dr's and we think it's wonderful and it has helped an awful lot of women. that's our experience.
I wasn't saying you shouldn't post on the thread, of course you can post where you like!
Sorry you had a crap time with your's but I think DelGirl is trying to be positive, because sometimes you just need to be.
I don't think your post helped.

Stayingsunnygirl · 02/10/2009 16:11

You can post wherever you want, differentnameforthis - but was it kind or sensitive to post negative experiences when the OP specifically asked people not to do so?

Would you be so insistent on doing this if you were talking to the OP face to face?

charis · 02/10/2009 16:22

I loved it, it stopped me getting pregnant and stopped my period pains although I still bled lightly. I got pregnant six weeks after I took it out. Fabulous.

differentnameforthis · 03/10/2009 00:40

Stayingsunnygirl, actually yes I would be & I have done! There are so many women suffering because of this 'device' that I am more than happy give my views face to face, thank you!

I just think it is rather naive to ignore the cons when you are putting a foreign body inside yourself, that's all!

But I get it, if the OP wants to bury her head, so be it!

DelGirl · 03/10/2009 07:27

I have read some of the negative points on here and elsewhere. But what is the alternative. It seems to be that the posters have had wonderful effects from it, what's to say I won't be one of them? Every drug can have it's side effects can't it, doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I'm sorry it didn't work for you, really but I don't want to worry how awful I might feel before i've even tried it sd that in itself will have a negative effect dykwim.

OP posts:
jooseyfruit · 03/10/2009 11:44

have you made your appointment DelGirl?
[nosy cow emoticon]!
I bet it's hard using the phone with your head buried in the sand!

Stayingsunnygirl · 03/10/2009 11:55

Differentnameforthis - I could understand you wanting to tell someone the downsides of the mirena if they honestly were hiding their head in the sand and ignoring all the possible negative side effects, but it seems pretty clear to me from this thread that DelGirl isn't doing that, so I do feel it was unkind and insensitive to say what you did.

differentnameforthis · 03/10/2009 12:12

delgirl, no where have I said not to have it, I just wanted you to be aware that it does have it's negatives & by ignoring them, doesn't mean it won't happen to you.

I really don't know what the fuss is, if you are happy with your choice, why can't you just read & then ignore what I said? A simple, 'thank you differentname etc' would have shut me up several posts ago, no?

Honestly, I hope that you have nothing but good experiences with it. But by you being aware of possible side effects means that if you start to get vision impairing headaches (for example), you may make the connection sooner, iyswim?

Just means maybe you wouldn't be suffering for years while drs tell you it isn't related to the mirena & put you through a whole load of tests, only for them to come back negative (not my story, btw)

jooseyfruit · 03/10/2009 12:16

By DelGirl on Fri 02-Oct-09 11:27:21

she did and you didn't shut up

DelGirl · 03/10/2009 13:17

oh dear, I have to laugh lol but i'm saying no more. I have my appointment made for Oct 15th I think it is. Just so glad I am able to . Ad's must have kicked in already. A few days ago, I may not have been so obliging!

OP posts:
jooseyfruit · 03/10/2009 13:48

glad you've got a smile on your face
let us know how you get on.

ooh I'm off to Amsterdam on the 15th [excited but slightly irrelevant emoticon]!

Elk · 03/10/2009 13:59

I had the mirena put in 2 weeks ago so I can't really say if it will work long term but so far I have been fine. I had to take it really easy for the first few days afterwards, painkillers and hot water bottles. I was in a lot of pain a few hours afterwards (but most people I have spoken to didn't experience this) and couldn't do anything so I wouldn't plan to do anything massively exciting straight afterwards just in case.
Since I had it fitted I have mentioned it to a few of friends/other mums at the school gate and they all seem to have them and think they're great.
