Heavy bleeding and anxiety

Has anyone been through anything similar and come out the other side? I started having horrific flooding, clots and heavy bleeding randomly. All investigations have been done and it's being attributed to peri, no dodgy cells on biopsy or fibroids found.

Its been going on for months and no medium or long term treatments have worked at all so far. The only thing that suppresses it is a course of norethisterone and it starts again afterwards. There are other treatments to try, I am not at the hysterectomy stage yet but know that's a possibility if nothing helps.
I am struggling so much with anxiety and low mood over this. Its like I am fading away. Stopped doing exercise due to the bleeding, stopped seeing friends, so many cancelled plans, not been able to be the mum I want to be at all.Work has been so limited and had to work from home.

Ive become so anxious about going out or being alone with young kids. This is after needing emergency care on more than one occasion and this happening quite dramatically when on my own with kids. Multiple episodes of flooding when out in public and having to leave a mess. The fact it can come out of the blue has made me feel so unsafe in my own body. I feel faint and panicked when it's happening and so scared about being trapped somewhere in this vulnerable state. I am becoming a bit agoraphobic with it all. The thought of trying more treatments and the fact that you don't know what's worked for a while and flooding can still happen (as I have found) is so frightening to me.

I feel like no-one understands and people are very kind but just look at me in horror when they hear what is happening. I just want to disappear till this can be sorted. I know low iron and hormones are likely playing into my response here too.Had anyone else been through this?

This is awful. Why is no one treating this properly? It's very common and there are effective treatments.

Why have you not been offered the Mirena coil or an ablation?

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heavy-periods/

Treatments from a GP include:

Specialist treatments
Specialist treatments for heavy periods include:

  • removing the lining of the womb (endometrial ablation)

Has your GP not suggested either or referred you to a gynaecologist?

Go back to your GP and ask about both of these.

Thank you for your kind reply.Sorry should have been more specific. Have tried some hormonal treatment including mirena. Ablation has been suggested and I will try whatever I can be offered. I've got myself in a bit of a state reading lots of negative stories about ablation though and hearing that it can be unpredictable for the first few months. Recent experiences when people said I would just have "spotting" or bleeding would stop and something very different happened have coloured my view I think. Just not feeling like I can face more months of bleeding and uncertainty. But know I may need to to get the right treatment. Just need to find some better coping strategies.

My mum had this and the only suggestion was a coil (which they later discovered wouldn’t work). She chose to have a hysterectomy but paid privately as the NHS made it quite difficult but the flooding was obviously massively affecting my mum and her quality of life.

Ah, that's different then. You had a Mirena- and it didn't work?
Maybe you need to bite the bullet and go for an ablation.
People tend to post negative comments on medical stuff so you may have read biased opinions on it.

Thank you.Yes the mirena has been tried and was no help for the symptoms. I think you're right.Just feel I have no resilience left to cope with failed procedures or uncertainty and bleeding again. But that's what needs to be done. I just can't believe how quickly my whole life has changed from regular but heavy periods to the inability to function. Thanks for your response.

Your poor mum. While I dont feel particularly lucky, I know I am compared to women who went through this even a few years ago as their are more options and even more ways of performing surgery. I just can't believe the impact of this on my life, and usually the type who pushes through all pain and discomfort.I cannot do that, this has floored me and frightened me. Hope the surgery gave your mum her life back.

I had the same symptoms as you ( I once flooded all over a chair in a work meeting) and had an ablation. No bad after effects, and the flooding stopped immediately. Go for it.

I am Peri menopausal and I sought the advice of a private menopause specialist who was recommended on here (Peter Greenhouse) and he prescribed me Slynd on a private prescription and then wrote to my GP asking that they continued prescribing me it, apparently it can be tricky to get NHS doctors to prescribe this pill.

I take the pill continuously with no break, and have had no flooding or passing clots for over 6 months.

Its horrendous what you’re going through x

Thank you so much. Really glad this has worked for you. How was the settling in with Slynd?Thats my worry as progesterone treatments seem to have lots of bleeding first few months.I would have been able to tolerate that a little while ago but struggling with the thought of it now. Really glad this has worked for you and the private appointment was worth every penny. Will keep his name in case I am able to go down that route depending on how things go.

Took a few months to settle, I was also doing it alongside Depo Provera 3 monthly injections but have stopped them now. The bleeding I became a lot more manageable quite quickly and now I haven’t had a bleed for months x

Incidentally, when I had my ablation, two small fibroids were found even though I'd been told I didn't have them. So scans can miss things.
