Alcohol and HRT

I'm 52 and have just been prescribed but yet to start HRT. I have oestrogen gel and progesterone capsules. Reading up on the progesterone it suggests that you can't drink alcohol while taking them. Can anyone advise if this is correct? I'm not a heavy drinker but do enjoy the odd night out and i'm not sure I'm ready for a teetotal lifestyle just yet.

Is that on the patient information leaflet? Certainly don't remember it on mine.

BettyStogs · 05/08/2026 21:52

No it just says to take at bedtime on an empty stomach, so I was googling why that was and found stuff about not drinking for 4 hours before taking. Apparently due to causing drowsiness

I don’t think this is right. I just read the leaflet in line and it doesn’t say that. What exactly have you been prescribed? That said, I don’t drink anyway as perimenopause symptoms weee aggravated by it

Its 100g capsules micronised progesterone. I did think it was a bit odd to be fair. I'm away on holiday next week so I'll start when I get back in case of any issues.

I take mine in the morning, first thing. So I guess that's the emptiest my stomach every will be.

Progesterone can cause drowsiness. That's why you're supposed to take it at night.

Alcohol also causes drowsiness so taking both together might be a bad idea if you're planning to drive anywhere, but not if your plans for the next 8 hours are being asleep. But if it's not in the patient leaflet it's not an actual contraindication, just somebody's suggestion.

You're not meant to take it with food because that changes the amount you absorb.

Nah I drink on mine and no difference

BettyStogs · 05/08/2026 23:59

Thank you all, that's helpful.

Unless this info was on a reputable scientific site or the manufacturer's website, don't take any notice of it
