Hi all,

im on 3 pumps of Oestrogel daily and 2 x 100mg utrogestran for 2 weeks. The bloat and constipation I get when it’s my utrogestran 2 weeks is horrendous. I’ve been on it nearly 2 years and the utrogestran weeks have gradually become worse. I’m on day 7 of this months utrogestran and I feel so bloated and down. I go on holiday tomorrow and dread the bloated stomach I’ll have. I’d rather have my period as I get relief then! Would I be ok to stop today to hopefully help the bloat for my holiday? I’ll see my gp after my hols about the utrogestran bloating and see an alternative! I’d try vaginally but would rather trial that at home than abroad! Thanks

Well, in theory it's not 'okay' because you'll have missed a full course of progesterone but if it's one-off it should be okay.
I'm not advising you to do it but simply saying that some women with medical supervision do take less progesterone.
A good compromise would be to use if vaginally.
As you're on a high dose of gel you shouldn't go too long before you start the next cycle of Utrogestan- so when will you do that?

Hi, I swapped from taking my progesterone orally to vaginally., just insert both your tablets into your vagina at night. This usually bypasses the digestive side effects. It did for me! I then told my doctor I had done this and so they prescribed me the pessary going forward just so it’s easier. I would say trying it vaginally is far better than not at all!

I also had problems taking it orally

Vaginally was ok, but then a specialist suggested trying it rectally and that’s made ALL the difference- zero side effects

I read somewhere that you can't absorb enough progesterone if you have it vaginally? Id prefer it this way to save my liver

@Cheese55 It's the complete opposite.
More is absorbed vaginally.

My consultant said they prefer women to use it that way (if they are happy to.)

I take mine vaginally under the guidance of GP and I think it definitely reduces side effects

Cheese55 · 08/08/2026 09:27

Maybe it was the gel that absorbs less. Do you still have to take it everyday?

I'm not sure what you mean.

What are you using?

You don't put gel in your vagina.

Ha ha. No I meant maybe the progesterone gel doesn't absorb as well as the tablet form.

The progesterone gel you can put on your skin just to be clear! My friend takes it like that.

There is no licensed progesterone gel in the UK.

If your friend is using that, it's something different to licensed HRT .

There is estrogen gel, but not for progesterone.
