Has anyone experienced severe anxiety after starting oestrogen gel and progesterone?

Hi has anyone else got experience of being incredibly anxious after starting oestrogel and progesterone?
I'm finding anxiety off the scale and preventing me from doing daily tasks.

I really struggled with both the gel and the progesterone at first. For the gel I stopped and then went up very slowly to one pump a day. Am now going up to 1 1/2 pumps.

For the progesterone I swapped to vaginally on my GPs advice and it really minimised the low moods I had got from taking it orally.

Thanks for your experiences. I've had a really useful appointment with a HCP from GP surgery and will be speaking to someone soon about a HRT review, so every bit of advice that has been given is really useful. I'm glad you found a way that suits your body. Feeling more hopeful today things can be sorted.

I’ve come off HRT. Had heart palpitations and taking progesterone orally made me feel like i was having a nervous breakdown.

I've had a horrible time using the mini pill once, and literally one dose of it sent me into a huge wave of anxiety and panic with unbearable fear that I had never felt before.

I'm extremely sensitive to medication side effects as I have a medication induced neurological involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia that was caused by some prescribed off label antipsychotic after a head injury and post concussion syndrome a decade ago. I'm fairly sure that if I tried even bioidentical HRT, I'd probably have a bad reaction like the one I had to the mini pill.

My theory is that certain people are faster metabolisers of medication than others, hence have a greater disposition to adverse effects. Obviously, I am not a doctor and this is just a theory.

I have had a pharmacogenetics test done to see how safe certain medications are for me, and how well I can metabolise them. Maybe I need to see if HRT is on the results 🤔

So sorry you are struggling so much, OP. I hope your anxiety calms down a lot soon. I've been there with the severe anxiety after my head injury, and it sucks. Huge hugs 💗

I’m definitely the same. Happened with labour induction, recent antibiotics, and HRT sadly.

The plus side of this sensitivity was that I lost 3st on weight loss injections at the very lowest dose 😊

I weight lift now to strengthen my body. It helps massively. As does eating lots of protein, veg and very little alcohol.

Where did you get your test done?

Sorry to hear you sound the same. Hoping things are settled for you now. It's so hard to settle symptoms. 💐
I tried a gym earlier in the year and was feeling the benefits. Weightlifting is something I hope to investigate when everything is calm again. Good luck with that.

A gynae told me ‘progesterone’s a horrible drug’. If you had pmt you might well suffer with HRT.

OP, you’re really being put through it, and you need to rest. Do deep breathing for 30
min and don’t stop. That resets your CNS.

I’d stop the hrt until you get to the doc. Ask to see an endocrinologist or a menopause specialist.

But first, ask for Valium. Take it on the worst days. Beta blockers work too. Don’t be put off.

So sorry you struggled with adverse effects too. You have much sympathy and empathy from me. 💗

I've even reacted to innocuous substances like artificial sweeteners like Stevia, and also an antifungal cream that was prescribed for thrush during breastfeeding made my movement disorder symptoms worse after a few minutes, literally after the tiniest pea-sized dose. I since discovered that antifungal creams are endocrine system disruptors, and of course affects oestrogen (and oestrogen affects dopamine, hence the reaction 😪😳)

I think the pharmacogenetics test was with a company called Myogenes. Just a sec while I check... 🤔

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 15/06/2026 22:32

Here's a screenshot of a page of the results from the pharmacogenetics test, and my I shouldn't take any antipsychotic drugs... great news in hindsight (!!!) 😳😪💔

It was a company I researched online, then sent off a saliva swab for genetics testing. It was interesting and excellent but expensive... my parents kindly paid for it and it was around £600.

Have you run the results by a UK doctor? The advice online is that any results from these companies should be run by a psychiatrist/ specialist as they only give a guide and are not 100% accurate.

I suppose it was quite cheap compared to other prices I saw. The thing I have to worry about is needing to take anything without any doubt about what it could do to my movement disorder symptoms.

I'm going to ask about how my results were interpreted, and if they're with my GP. I cant afford to get another one from a company that does UK drug regulations (yes, I knew this one had FDA results). It's annoying me now 😒
