Anxiety

I have suffered with anxiety for the past twenty years, I've carried on despite it, because you have to, but I know it has affected my life choices, things I have done, not done. I am now in my late 40s and I have decided enough is enough, I am on hrt, the doctor thought that might help the anxiety too, but the anxiety was with me long before the perimenopause! I have tried counselling, hypnotherapy, various supplements but nothing has eased it enough to make a difference. I don't feel depressed, but I do feel this weight on my chest a lot now, and a jitteriness which I hadn't had previously, I am wondering has anyone taken prescribed meds that help anxiety or is it just antidepressants, and if anyone could recommend any? Thank you. Posting in Mental Health too.

Fluoxetine is great for anxiety and definitely worth trying. You do have to commit to stick with it through the tricky initial side effects period but it is worth it if you can do that. I've come to realise that some of us are just better off on long term medication, as much as we would prefer to not be on medication. Anti depressants have been life changing for many people I know, in terms of anxiety and the impact it has on their lives.

Have you tried CBT? Different to counselling and hypnotherapy. You can access it online free too- some courses. It's one of the things recommended by NICE.

OR adjusting your HRT?
NICE guidance is not to use SSRIs but to adjust HRT maybe more estrogen.
What dose are you on?

It also depends on how your anxiety impacts day to day.
IME everyone experiences some form of anxiety but it's whether it is stopping you doing things. eg is it around travel, work, meeting people?

All SSRIs have side effects which some people find unacceptable, from weight gain, dry mouth, constipation etc. They aren't side-effect free.

@Menomoo78 I have always suffered from anxiety and went on citalopram in my early twenties and been on it ever since. It really changed my life. I’m on HRT now and take it alongside the citalopram x
