Post menopause bleeding?

Haven’t had a period for at least 3 years and I’m on HRT. I’m 57. Started a light bleed yesterday which has now turned into a bit more but nothing too heavy. It’s ’old-looking’ blood. Anyone else had this?

Yes I had post menopausal bleeding. I was diagnosed with a hormone producing tumour on my ovary, which was causing the bleeding.

You definitely need to get this checked out @BobLobla .

Oh blimey. Right yes. Will ring for an appt in the morning then. Thank you!

Yes, make an appointment with your GP, doctors take PMB seriously.

I'm 56 and had something similar earlier this year. The GP took it very seriously, referred me to a specialist clinic where I had a scan and hysteroscopy.

All clear. Contacting your GP is the right thing to do.

Saw the GP this morning and she gave me an exam and has referred me. Thanks for the info folks. Just got the 2 week wait now…

Brilliant that you’ve been referred. Fingers crossed for you that it’s nothing serious.

Do I had my scan yesterday (ultrasound tummy and vaginal) and gp has just rung asking me to go in to discuss results 8th June. Does this sound scary that it’s so quickly back at the GP? Or not so scary as it’s in 10 days rather than tomorrow???

If it was anything serious I think you'd be called in today or asap.
Two weeks is quite a while.
In the meantime can you ask for a copy of the results/ letter to be sent to you?
You have a right to see your results.

BobLobla · 27/05/2026 12:50

Ok that’s a good idea . Thank you

Don't be deterred if they say your GP has to see them first. They don't- they are your results.

worriedaboutmyboytoday · 27/05/2026 12:56

It's likely to be a simple procedural step ie patient had scan, so discuss the results with her.

I was at a clinic and the doctor discussed my scan results with me straight after. The vaginal scan indicated that I had a thickened endometrial lining, so I was referred for an hysteroscopy.

That showed the lining wasn't thickened at all and it was after that I received a 'looks like you've got nothing to worry about' letter.

Try not to worry, although fully Ppreciate that that's easier said than done.

EmeraldJeanie · 27/05/2026 14:55

I would find it impossible to wait til 8th of June. Make earlier appointment? Phone consultation?

BobLobla · 27/05/2026 15:47

I can ask the surgery to let me see test results via my NHS app but now it comes to it I’m a bit scared to do it.

OP posts:
worriedaboutmyboytoday · 27/05/2026 16:57

It's difficult as the scan results will just be raw data, which non-medics probably won't be able to interpret. The temptation to then Google and terrify yourself is real. Got myself into a dreadful state a few years ago about a benign tumour.

Could you call the surgery, explain your concerns and see if they can arrange a sooner apt?

If it was serious you'd be called in to have more tests.
The results will usually show how thick/thin the lining is and if any more investigations are needed or not.
Try not to worry.

BobLobla · 27/05/2026 17:50

Thank you. That’s a bit more reassuring 🙂

When I had an ‘abnormal’ transvaginal and trans abdominal scan I got a text 2 days later saying to make an appointment with my GP, went in and they made an appointment for me the next day. Was put on 2 week wait pathway for suspected cancer, a hysteroscopy and a biopsy, all fine. Even on that pathway, 90% of people don’t have cancer.
I would feel reassured that it seems non-urgent. Smile

@BobLobla I meant to post before that the risks of endometrial cancer when on HRT are minute. There are stats which show this. Bleeding on HRT is far less of an issue than women post menopausal who are not on HRT.
If you're using daily progesterone as part of your HRT it's very rare for the womb lining to grow and become cancerous. The bleeding can be a late period (depending when yours stopped) or a blip in the HRT. It could also be a fibroid that's grown and started some bleeding.

The guidance now is that for women who bleed on HRT they are scanned within 6 weeks (considered less urgent) whereas for menopausal women not on HRT, it's 2 weeks.

Some GPs may not be aware of this or decide to use the 2-week timescale anyway.

BobLobla · 28/05/2026 10:02

Wow thank you @JinglingSpringBellsthat’s really good to know.
