How much sleep are you getting per night atm?

I’m 49 and have been wearing a Fitbit for about 9 years because apparently I like to torture myself.

On average I get about 6 hours sleep a night, (with just an hour of deep sleep 😭). Sometimes it’s less - if I’ve had a ‘wake at 5am for no reason with hormonal dread and then no ability to get back to sleep again’.

6 hours doesn’t feel like enough but I’ve kind of made peace with it. Ish.

If you are out the other side of perimenopause, did your sleep duration improve?

Sidenote: Fitbit can get in the sea with their pointless Sleep Animal (Giraffe! Again! Woop! 🙄). AND - I don’t trust their benchmarks - ‘typical range for people like you’. Harrumph.

Thanks in advance.

Fitbit tells me my average is 6.5 hours. However, sometimes it classes me as being in light sleep when I KNOW I’ve been laying there awake. I’m post menopause, on HRT. I generally don’t need as much sleep in the summer, so don’t feel tired day to day. Give me alcohol though, and I pass out on the sofa.

Beamur · 01/05/2026 07:47

About 6 hours is normal for me too.

crackofdoom · 01/05/2026 13:40

I do pretty well, about 7-9 hours a night (sometimes more at weekends), but that's because I medicate the fuck out of the problem with a combination of amitriptyline and herbal sleep tablets, having suffered from insomnia all my adult life. Also, I sleep noticeably better during the progesterone phase of the month.

JinglingSpringbells · 02/05/2026 08:25

@OrdinaryGirl I don't think you should rely on being post menopausal to sort your sleep.

I'm almost 20 years post menopause, and been on HRT for most of those years with a supportive and expert private consultant who emphasises the need for good sleep for health. I've had two trials to stop and my sleep was affected (which was one of the main reasons I use HRT.)

Have you thought about HRT?

RandomMess · 02/05/2026 08:29

5 hours and usually awake at several points.

OrdinaryGirl · 02/05/2026 08:56

@JinglingSpringbells absolutely. I’m on HRT. I’m about to have a phone call with the GP to ask to be prescribed oestrogen gel for use just one week a month at night as well as the Evorel 75 patches I’m on.
I have a Mirena and don’t bleed, but I think my worst sleep is in the week before what is probably my period - ie low oestrogen, so I’m hoping a little additional boost of it at bedtime will help.

Post menopause. No hrt. 8 hours. I'm just lucky though I think.

riseandbloom · 02/05/2026 15:46

I'm getting about 6–7 hours of sleep per night, but it's interrupted.

goodnightssleepbenice · 02/05/2026 15:50

I’m taking amitriptyline as my sleep was horrendous, so now I probably get 7-8 hours

Berlin2018 · 02/05/2026 15:51

Used to have 5-6 hours a night - with 2-3 hours awake in the early hours but since I’ve started taking magnesium I’m averaging 7-8 hours uninterrupted with 9-10 hours every now and then.

BonosToupee · 02/05/2026 15:57

At the moment I’m averaging around 6 hours of very broken sleep. I wear an Oura ring and it tells me when I’ve had a bad night…helpful- not!!
I’m long into menopause and currently coming off HRT after 8 years. Apart from lousy sleep which will hopefully improve, I feel soo much better.

sunnybluesky75 · 02/05/2026 16:02

45 yr old, peri, on progesterone tablets, and HRT spray. I average 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Occasionally wake with the dreaded 2am anxiety but touch wood not had that for a while (That's normally when I have stuff going on at work). I do take amitriptline and promethazine amongst the medicine cabinet of medications I take 😂 so that helps. But I also have bipolar and lack of sleep as well as stress sends me manic. So sleep is vitally important to my well being.

7238SM · 02/05/2026 16:08

I'm 48, peri and get about 7hrs. Occasionally 8 in a weekend but sometimes 6. I don't have a fit bit branded watch, but have used similar ones. Maybe fit bits are more accurate, but I don't trust mine. I've got up at night to get a drink and wee- it logs it as light sleep. Sometimes it thinks I'm still sleeping- when I've been up for 2hrs and just sitting at my desk!

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 02/05/2026 16:10

7-9 hours a night, I’m on HRT

bugalugs45 · 02/05/2026 16:14

I tend to get about 6 hours on work nights ( I work 3 days a week ) and 8/9 on non work days but it’s always broken , wake up at least twice , have a wee , but can usually get straight back off . I’m 47 and just started HRT , thanks to this sleep has improved slightly . I can’t work full time at mo , body just couldn’t cope .

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/05/2026 16:15

6 hours but less atm as cat is waking me up at 6am to go out!

Same here just switched to tablets and spray.

loveawineloveacrisp · 02/05/2026 17:07

6-7 hours, but usual need to get up in the night. Post menopausal and on HRT. I've just upped my progesterone to 200mg continuously as I was having horrendous sleep one week out of every 3 and ChatGPT suggested I was low on progesterone based on my oestrogen dose. Haven't spoken to the doc about it yet but got a phone appt next week. I also take magnesium glycinate & ashwaganda, plus melatonin when I feel I need it. The number of pills I take before bed is ridiculous.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 02/05/2026 17:35

I’m 42 and peri and my Fitbit tells me my average is 5h 23m - I’m also a giraffe Grin

Seems enough for me to be honest, I’m not that tired, work full time, exercise every day and have plenty of energy. Plus I quite like being up at 5 and having time to do stuff before work. I’ve made my peace with it!

Purplewarrior · 02/05/2026 17:43

I really prioritise my sleep and get an average of nine hours a night. I am sixty but I have always slept well.

DinoLil · 02/05/2026 17:50

About 2hrs but I have CPS.

Additup · 03/05/2026 15:07

Generally 7-8 hours unless there's some external stress on my mind then I have a tendency to wake about 3am. I've always fortunately fir ne been a good sleeper like that though.
The only sleep issue I had with menopause was getting up for a wee in the night, but vaginal oestrogen has sorted that out and I don't wake at all for a wee now.

WildFlowerBees · 03/05/2026 15:09

Anywhere between 5 & 6.5, when my watch scores my 6 hr 23 min sleep as excellent I want to drop it off a balcony I’m bloody shattered! I have found that when I wear earplugs I do sleep longer and deeper though.

Tillow4ever · 03/05/2026 16:32

I’m not sure how much I’m getting, but I wake every 2-3 hours needing the toilet. Even if I go and there’s hardly anything. Grrr! When I wake between 3-5am I find I can’t fall back to sleep so end up exhausted.

Luckily I can work flexibly so log on at 7am and finish at 3pm. Means I’m not completely exhausted the last couple of hours of work if I waited to start later.

Rowgtfc72 · 03/05/2026 16:42

I'm 54 and been to the doc recently for this. I'm sound asleep by half nine and then wake every half hour from midnight until I get up at 340am for work. I am running on empty.
Doc suggested trying amitryptiline but I cycle to work and operate machinery so not sure that would work.
I'm still on the minipill for the ext six months, so still getting progesterone but very definitely missing oestrogen.
Considering hrt now after spending years saying not interested at this level of no sleep is just not sustainable.
Could I just be prescribed oestrogen maybe?
I've not had a period for a year despite being absolutely bang on regular all the years of taking the pill, not keen on periods returning.
