Mirena coil for heavier, irregular periods in perimenopause at 39?

Hello. I am 39, 2 kids, husband has had the snip. Recent years my periods have gone a bit out of whack, cycles varying length, heavier flow and I’ve been suffering with low iron for 18 months (had bloods/poop tests, I’m not ill). Dr has suggested Mirena coil. I’ve read about women using the coil to slow/stop their periods but it always seems to be extreme cases and women really suffering, like constant bleeding for weeks which would be horrible to manage. I’m bleeding for about a week each time now with 3/4 heavy days (flooding a super+ tampon after a few hours) and my cycle varies from 22-28 days. My reservation is that I’m thinking is it really bad enough to risk spotting/more irregularity/acne/headaches/etc and having a device fitted. I wondered if any ladies like me could share their experiences and if it changed things for them. Thank you ☺️

First six months was annoying with fairly continuous spotting. Since then it’s been amazing. I am so glad not to have periods any more especially not perimenopause ones. Don’t think I am having other side effects.

Also it can be the progesterone part of HRT.

It’s amazing. As pp said spotting lots in first six months (but not heavy) and then nothing. Occasionally spot or two of bloody mucus around time period is due but that’s it. No bleeding when it was replaced for a second one.
have a friend with bad endometriosis and it worked wonders for her really heavy bleeding.

Worked for me. Haven't had a period in four years

Thank you. GP did mention it may come in useful if I need HRT in coming years. Spotting for months sounds awful but so are week long heavy periods I guess - always happen during vacation too 😂 so would be good to get a handle of that and hopefully curb the anaemia.

Hi hun, I’m 37 with 1 kid and have had the mirena fitted about 2 months ago. I was similar to you, cycles varying in length and the first 2 days of my periods were just flooding, clots and changing tampons and pads every hour, which also led to low iron.
Inserting the mirena was only really sore when they opened my cervix, like a weird burny pain which lasts about 10 seconds. Putting the coil in itself didn’t hurt but felt weirdly like you were being tickled from the inside 🤣
I’ve had 2 proper periods since having it in and they lasted about 3 days and could get away with just a panty liner! Really reduced the flow and length. I’ve had spotting about half the time but some days you would only notice when you wiped after a wee, that’s how light it is. Had minimal other side effects, bit crampy but manageable, slight headache on period days and a bit af acne on my back. I would deffo recommend it for anyone struggling with heavy periods xx

Oh I love it. The first 6 weeks I had a lot of spotting but now I get barely anything, and only when wiping occasionally. So nice not to have periods. Wish I’d got one years ago! Everyone I know with one is evangelical about them. Plus they make it much easier with HRT as you can just add oestrogen.

I'm on my second. I had spotting for 6 months with the first, but literally haven't had a period since. In hindsight I am actually really cross with myself that I put up with debilitating pain and heavy periods for so long.

I'm 42 had mine put in in November similar to others had spotting for a few months but that was annoying but manageable now nothing at all. I did have mine done under general and fibroids removed at the same time too so was a bit more complex but so glad I had it done

Shines87 · 21/04/2026 21:53

Thanks everyone 🥰 very helpful!

I had one years ago for contraception and it was bloody brilliant, wouldn't hesitate to have one now, they mean you don't have to mess about with progesterone tablets for HRT too

If the spotting is problematic ask for provera to stop it
