Fat and stressed, or get HRT?

I’m 57 and no periods (except one) in over a year

All good, but I’m finding I’m waking at night with DOOM. And sore knee and hip joints and aching legs

I’m a bit fat, and have a lot going on with bereavement, general heavy responsibilities

I’m wondering if HRTmight help, or if other factors are causing this

Um, how fat is a bit fat? I don’t know how to phrase that, if you’re just like a bmi 26, then maybe hrt, but it could be you’re very unfit and maybe a little more than a bit fat?

Ok you clearly don’t want to answer on how fat snd that’s fair enough, so we can’t advise on diet or if your weight is impacting your joints.

so yeah,try hrt.

Inmyuggs · 19/04/2026 22:12

Go and talk to a doctor who can advise you
I think hrt and wonderful and wonder why someone would not use them...looking at a few woman that didnt and the moods behaviour.
I have never been fat or gained weight until the past year of hrt and the natural weight changes in my body.
I have a increased appetite after always being slim moving into another size up sucks but it is going to happen
My night time dose of progesterone is like a sleeping pill it gives me a great night sleep and rest.
I recommend hrt.

This is just really rude. I’ve said a bit fat, and that I do loads of sport

It’s perfectly reasonable to ask for advice on HRT in my circumstances.

I am fat, stressed and on HRT...
It helps with other symptoms though!

Ha! Thanks, I’d never have thought of asking for it but for a post I saw.

Also properly fat, reasonably fit, always stressed & find hrt helpful.

It's a suck it & see scenario. Everyone is different...

Maybe HRT would help with sleep and also motivate you so you're not feeling tired every day and able to focus on the weight loss too?

It would be really worth trying to get your weight down if you can.
As PPs have said, it depends if you mean a few pounds of a few stones.

The risks of being overweight , regardless of doing sport, are high for female cancers as well as diabetes in middle age.

Your aching hips and joints may well be linked to carrying extra weight. You want to avoid a hip or knee replacement in a few years!

Talk to your GP - and do you also monitor your blood pressure? If it's high you'd have to get it down before using HRT.

HRT should certainly help with your sleep and your aching joints. I would give it a try. If you don't like it, you can stop taking it, but I take it and I love it! My sleep is generally great and because I sleep well I have plenty of energy. I honestly don't understand why so many women agonise about whether to take HRT or not. To me, it's a no-brainer, as long as your doctor says you are okay to take it and have no health contraindications.

Hmm, overweight and stressed with ovarian hormones or overweight and stressed without them?

It's a no brainer for me!

I don't have the perfect body or the perfect life either but there's no way I'd add untreated menopause on top of everything else.

Yes, I think this what I was wondering about,

I was just putting everything down to other things, but then read a bit about the middle of the night doom waking and aching legs and that’s what got me musing on it

I feel permanently slightly anxious for no reason too, quite unpleasant

Ive also noticed that the aching/doom feelings are cyclical like pre menstrual stuff
