Any experience of Mirena coil for womb thickening after menopause?

Hi everyone, I've just seen reading the comments on Marina coil. I'm 72 now & every year since 2022 I've had to have day case GA for biopsies for thickening of womb. In September last year (2025) I bled again slightly so had biopsy thankfully just benign Polyps again. In January & March this year (2026) I bled again so on the 28th of April I'm back in Day Surgery again for another biopsy but this time the Consultant wants to fit Marina coil to help disperse thickening. Last year it was 11mm thick but after Mounjaro I lost 4 stone last year & now the thickening is 7mm. Still too thick though. I had a voil in my early 40s & bled for 6 weeks then passed out having it removed so I'm not keen on it at all. I've been told I can't have Hysteroscopy in out patients because my womb is shut tight so a GA is necessary each time. In 2024 the doctor in day surgery ruptured my cervix trying to get into my womb for the biopsy & I bled for nearly a month then had the same thing done in 2025 by the Consultant & he managed to get into womb but it was full of blood from the rupture so no biopsy was taken & now I'm having another GA this month & if I consent a marina coil. What if the coil doesn't agree with me again & I need for weeks again, they won't be able to remove it in out patient clinic as they can't get in my womb unless I'm under yet another GA. I never thought Id be needing a coil at aged 72. I've been told I could have the pill to get Progesterone into me & that's what the coil does but the pill or even regular pessaries are less effective than the coil. I'm sorry to have gone on so long but any advice would be gold to me right now ladies. Thank you. xxx

I am post menopausal, I take progesterone in tablet form. I constantly face pressure to have the mirena coil fitted and constantly push back and say no. Much to the doctor’s chagrin.
I think we need to question why there is such a huge drive to get as many women as possible on mirena. I don’t think I’ve had a medical consultation in over 30 years where mirena was not pushed on me as the preferred direction. It is ludicrous.

To add; while I am well aware this is in no way indicative of the population as a whole, every single woman I know personally who has experienced the mirena coil has a horror story to tell. I’d sooner take the hysterectomy!!

I had one fitted as I couldn't tolerate utrogestan in any delivery format.

It's the best thing I've ever done. I've had a hysteroscopy under GA since it was fitted and they kept it in during the procedure. It is controlling my uterine lining nicely and my endometrium is fine now.

I wasn't post meno though but peri.

I think the reason the Mirena is promoted is because so many doctors can see the positive impact it can have for many women.

I say this having tried it twice for contraception in my 30s when it didn't settle either time. I've had two in meno and it saved me as it means I can have high oestrogen without utrogestan.

Also they don't need to access your uterus to remove it, they simply pull the strings whilst you cough and it comes out. My GP took mine out in 5 seconds.

Just to balance this out, equally anecdotally, I don't have my Mirena coil for menopause-related reasons (I didn't know it could be used as a treatment for womb thickening, so clicked on this thread to learn more) but I've had one for 15 years (with some gaps to have children) and think it is a miracle, and know some other women who feel the same!

Thank you girls, all this has been so helpful. I really don't want this coil. I'm due for hysteroscopy on 28th & all the Consultants medical secretary could advise was to discuss it before I ho down to theatre. I think that's a little late.
I just hope choosing not to have the coil will be accepted by the Consultant & right for my health too.
Thank you again girls. xxx

Hi I would really like to ask my Consultant for the Progesterone tablets too. Does anyone know the name of the tablets. I've been having sleepless nights since I had my last spotting on March 4th. I'm so tired of this Day Surgery hysteroscopy under GA every year even though my thickening has gone down to 7mm from 11mm last year. I am definitely sure I so not want a coil at my age so if anyone one knows the medical name for Progesterone tablets I'd be really grateful. God bless xxx

These are mine. Please remember you don’t need to follow what the consultant says and you are your own best advocate. If I followed what they said I’d have the coil, which I really do not want. The tablets are grand for me!

Thank you so much. I'm going to show the Consultant these & insist on no coil. I don't want one. I didn't want a coil when I was a young woman & now at 72 I really don't want one.
Thank you for taking the time to help me.
