Never ending bleeding

Has anyone else had this? What did you do?

My cycle shortened to 21 days in around August last year, bleeding for 15 of those days. I got a scan and blood work done and everything is as expected, so my doctor said it’s likely perimenopause.

I went onto the Slinda pill in November to try and regulate my cycle but it didn’t affect the bleeding at all. I got an IUD fitted at the end of February to try to make it stop. I’ve now only had a handful of bleed free days since the middle of January. I’m sick of it and just want it to stop.

Does anyone have a success story with something else? I’m giving the IUD 6 months but I have a feeling it won’t work.

Progesterone only (pill & Mirena) made me bleed continuously too. I had a struggle to get them to remove the coil too as they just kept repeating ‘it can take up to 3 months…..it can’t take 6 months in some women…..just give it a bit longer’. The GP surgery basically refused to remove it and I had to turn up at a sexual health clinic and beg them to remove it before I attempted to take it out myself!

I wasn’t on it for contraception though, it was supposed to help with my incredibly (couldn’t leave the house) heavy periods. I just took nothing, put up with the irregular cycles, tranexamic acid initially helped a little with the flooding, but then I eventually ended up (thankfully!) having a hysterectomy.

Just bumping really to hope someone might come along with a suggestion, and just wanted to say don’t let them endlessly fob you off like they did with me.
I hope you find a solution Flowers

How old are you?

If you are under 55 and healthy (UKMEC cut-off of 50 applies to contraceptive use only) you could take the combined pill continuously.

This has kept me bleed free and hormonally stable since 2009.

I’m 45 and bleed almost constantly too (albeit not heavily). I have a mirena and am on HRT patches.
Bulky diffuse echogenic uterus on scan suggestive of adenomyosis.
Im awaiting a gynae appointment and will ask for a hysterectomy

I can't have an IUD because wonky cervix blah blah... I just take the pill continuously now because if I didn't what would happen each month would scare Moses. Can you tell I use humour to deal with it?! Continuous pills was the only solution for me. Sorry you're going through this, I sympathise a lot.

I’m on the Mirena IUD 18 months and am still bleeding for more than half of every cycle. I think it’s also made me really anxious too. I’m having a scan to check its placement but even if that’s normal I think I’m going to get rid of it anyway

I had a mirena coil fitted early Jan and bled constantly until about mid Feb, but it has eased off a lot now and my last period was barely more than spotting. It's honestly changed my life in just a few months, so I'd persevere if you can. They say 3-6 months for it to settle I think.

novosure ablation ? Not had a period for 11 years & I was bleeding heavy 3 weeks out of 4 before having it done.

StellaShining · 12/04/2026 05:03

@Charliede1182 Im 39, my mum was a similar age when she started perimenopause so although I’m on the younger side it’s not unexpected. Done having kids luckily.

I’m cautious about taking the combined pill continuously as when I was younger I couldn’t even take a double packet as I’d start bleeding anyway. I might try though if the IUD doesn’t work out.

That sounds awful, sorry your doctor has been so useless! Fortunately my GP has been good, I have a check up with her to discuss how it’s going in a couple of weeks. The bleeding ist heavy I’m just getting worn down with it. By reading these posts I think a gynaecologist is the best way to go.

I was thinking about raising HRT but not sure if it would help with the bleeding. I don’t have any other symptoms either. Has it helped at all?

@Arlanymor I haven’t had much luck with continuous pills when I was younger but willing to try anything now! The alternative to humour is to be miserable so I think you’re on the right track :)

I have night sweats and brain fog and weird daily facial flushing in the afternoons which initially was improved on HRT but seem to be coming back.
It’s all so none specific and really difficult to assess 😩

No real words of advice but huge huge sympathy. I am in the same boat. Started HRT last October in the naive hope it would regulate my constant bleeding and if anything it has just made it worse. Am having another transvaginal scan tomorrow as had one last year which diagnosed fibroids and I want to see what effect the HRT has had on them. It’s going to literally be a blood bath for the poor sonographer so that’s another indignity to add to the pile. GP pushing Mirena but position of fibroids may make that impossible and to be honest I can’t allow myself to hope that will help as the disappointment if it doesn’t will finish me off. Am going on holiday in June ( beach type thing) and am wondering what the point is as I’ll likely still need to wear a super plus tampon and a pad. Utterly utterly fed up so just wanted to massively empathise with you op.
