Joint pain (hip & knees), Collagen, Postmenopause

I am 60 and have joint pain in my hips, knees (its really affecting my sleep as I struggle to get comfortable in bed) and my feet also feel sore stiff especially coming down the stairs first thing on a morning.

I try and eat more protein and started lifting at the gym a year ago.

I am wondering about taking collagen or something similar and if that would help. I am seeing lots of adverts on my facebook (some are sponsored) in comments some swear by it, others say its a scam and made no difference, others reckon consistency is key and taking this in tablet form is easier than taking as a powder (which I can see it would be easier to take as a tablet rather than messing about with a powder), some go on about different types of collagen and you need to take something with five types in. Also if it helped my skin and hair that would be a welcome bonus. I was taken off HRT two years ago due to polyps and fibroids hospital said I wasn’t to take it. Any advice?

It has made zero difference to my skin and hair. I take it in powder form and won’t bother buying any more when it is finished.

Thanks opinion on this seems to be really divided with some singing its praises and others slating it (for not having any benefits).

I seem to be the only person my age or younger that I know who doesn’t take this. I also haven’t tried botox or fillers or whatever and I would say more than half of the people I know have jumped on the band wagon and look
great. But I always think of poor Lesley Ash and how she ended up so scared to dip
my toe in the water there.

Used the powder Collegan for nearly 3 years religiously. Afraid to say did not notice a jot of difference. Hope you find something that helps with the pain.

Thanks the pain and discomfort would be my main motivation and any other benefits would be a surprise welcome bonus.

Are you on magnesium?

I read that physios do recommend collagen for protecting joints/protecting against bone loss but not sure if this would make a difference to aches and pains but equaly not sure if that is even backed by any science.

Bringnbuy77 · 01/03/2026 11:02

I have been taking it as about 3 months ago I was feeling so rubbish but I also have been religiously taking magnesium, omega 3, vitamin D iron and biotin and feel miles brighter so it could have been any of those things I needed rather than the collagen but I’m reluctant to change anything now as whatever it is seems to be working! I stir mine into coffee each morning and it’s fine, I can’t taste it.

Have you seen a physio/doctor to find out what’s causing the pain? Without knowing that, it’s impossible to know what would help most.

Pistachiomonster · 01/03/2026 11:58

I haven’t seen a Dr or Physio yet @ReignOfError I don’t put a lot of faith in physios and its a nightmare trying to get a Dr’s appointment.
Yes i started taking magnesium a few weeks ago and it is helping me stay a sleep if I can get comfortable but the problem is getting comfortable.

see a physio
I had what I called 'squeaky' hip and knees.
turned out that it's due to weakness in glutes and core.
general weight training has mostly stopped it and I'm almost pain free.
just lifting might not be enough.

Thanks sorry I wasn’t clear I have been going to a gym a small class ran by a PT and we work on whole body legs, arms, glutes etc. i really enjoy the classes (still having problems with hips, knees worse when trying to get to sleep or sitting for ling periods which I try to avoid and stiff feet worse on a morning).
