Is this my mirena running out?

I am in Peri menopause 48.
I’ve had a mirena for almost 5 years.
A couple of weeks ago, I had what felt like signs of ovulation, now I’ve got very sore breasts and have done for a few days. I’m kind of expecting a period but nothing yet.

I also use estrogel and the vaginal
cream.

By the looks of things the mirena should be replaced after five years for HRT. I am not using it for contraception

Mirena doesn't usually stop ovulation, but it can do for a minority. Have you had no signs of ovulation at all while you have been on it?

I had one fitted for endometriosis. My GP was happy to replace it every 4 yrs when I started to have breakthrough symptoms.
So yes, the hormone will be running out and you are more likely to have symptoms of menstrual cycle. It is also possible to get pregnant so it’s worth doing a test. There is a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy with the coil so it’s important to rule it out.

They've extended how long you can have the same coil for contraceptive purposes to 8 years but still 5 for HRT, so sounds like you need a new one.

I had mine fitted for heavy periods, not contraception. Every time I’ve gone and asked for it to be replaced (at 5, 6 and 7 years) I’ve been told no. It’s now been 7.5 years and is basically ineffective!

Thanks for your reply. I’ve not had any signs of ovulation at all since having the Mirena so it was quite obvious couple of weeks ago.

Definitely not a chance of being pregnant unless it’s immaculate!

8y seems a very long time for contraception purposes.

@PotatoBreadForTheWin it makes no sense to have a mirena for heavy bleeding if when it runs out they won’t replace it !

I hope it’s doing something to help it a bit.

I have a different coil, but it's still hormonal and I definitely notice breakthrough symptoms when it's coming to the end of it's life. I'm on my 4th coil now, and it's been the same every time.

I had my current mirena fitted for heavy periods and severe period pain, and whilst it reduced my periods to very light and no pain, I then got more and more severe ovulation pain each month until ovulation pain was as bad as the period pain had been (pelvic and back) Then I had a suspected ovarian cyst rupture, and no more ovulation pain or cramping for a year and the last couple of months I've had ovulation cramping again. I learnt that ovarian cysts are much more common with the mirena. So if the ovulation symptoms you mention was cramping and it gets worse, bare in mind it could be cysts. Unfortunately they won't really do much for them unless they can detect them and they are a certain size.

Where are you going to ask for your replacement?

I got given a card saying I had to come back in 5 years and I had to sign it!

I think you need to complain.

I was told 4 years for Mirena for HRT...and if it's running out there's a risk to your uterus if you continue to use oestrogen without sufficient progesterone.

Thank you for saying that. I was ignoring it to avoid the gp booking charade but will get myself together!

I’m also was told 5 yrs for contraception and four for HRT. And now you mention it, I need to check my date as I have been noticing breast tenderness for the last week …
