Hi , has anyone been diagnosed with a hip laberal tear , bursitis and degenerative hip ? What was your prognosis please?
Im in pain with my right hip for five years the Dr kept fobbing me off with bursitis , until finally agreed to an MRI which diagnosed my problems I’m now booked in for a lumbar MRI
I have been given exercises to strengthen my glutes which makes my pain and stiffness worse
any advise from anyone please.

I have slightly different issues to you- hip dysplasia and early onset arthritis... but I find aqua aerobics has been a godsend. It stretches and strengthens my muscles without any of the pressure on my hip joints. I feel similar when I come out to when I do from a physio session. Might be worth a try?

Thankyou for your reply , the constant pain would get you down wouldn’t it , I’m really nervous about having the lumbar MRI and what the findings are as I’ve been in pain for about 5 years . It’s good that I’m investigating it but I’m worried as I was shocked when the hip MRI revealed more problems and not just bursitis.
Im going to look into Aqua Aerobics as the physio just leaves me in more pain and I’m doing them every other day .

Bilateral hip bursitis here. Originally diagnosed as arthritis. Only just got the revised diagnosis last week. Chat gpt has actually been really helpful. Things I'm going to do are:
Stop sitting on sofa and get a "granny chair" so my hips are higher than knees.
Stop wearing close fitting jeans as physio has said clothes really can make symptoms worse. I'm going to get some floaty trousers which seems very in at moment so that's an excuse to go shopping. 😀 That and wear skirts more.
Do glute exercises to strengthen the very weak muscles.
I have already got the super thick mattress topper which helps at night.

Don't want to do the steroids injection yet as hoping to avoid that. I'm post menopausal and have been suffering with crippling pain for around 4 years now so I can empathise.

Hi , I’m like you and don’t want to start steroids yet as they only mask the pain and don’t necessarily work for everyone . I do own a few pairs of tight jeans that I wear with my boots but haven’t worn them for a while as I do find they don’t feel as comfortable any more .

@Carmen866 What is the diagnosis? you mention 3 things.

Hi , has anyone been diagnosed with a hip laberal tear , bursitis and degenerative hip ?

Have you had an appt with an orthopaedic consultant?

Is this a case where you need a hip replacement?

Carmen866 · 20/02/2026 11:29

Yes I’ve got an appointment with orthopaedics in March , so I’ll probably know what’s happening then , I’m currently doing the physio exercises every other day , the exercises were given to me over the phone , I’m not even sure that I’m doing them correctly.

@Carmen866 physio should feel challenging but not hurt.

Were your exercise on the physi-app? If not I suggest paying to see a physio - usually around £50, take your exercises and ask them to show you in person how to do them properly/suggest better options.

NHS physio is woefully bad.

I went to see a physio last year with knee pain. Told him I was time poor, I needed something I could do 5mins twice a day. He broke it down to three exercises, all of which I could do in the office.

£65 well spent.

Hi , thankyou for your reply , I agree I’m better off with a private physio but I might wait until after Ive had my lumbar MRI next week .
Trying to see someone at my Dr’s surgery now is a mare like most practices. The physio sent me email of the exercises to do , I find the bridge tricky as it puts pressure on my lower back , maybe there is a technique. Do you know what the best way is to find a physio please ?

Edited

It's madness trying to do exercises without a face to face.

Google physios in your town.
Google your local private hospital - most have physio depts and bios of who works there. Choose one who is experienced in hips.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 20/02/2026 12:27

I agree with @JinglingSpringbells

Just Google and see who you like the look of most.

Also you don't need to be wedded to a physio. If you don't like them, move on and find someone else.

Thankyou so much , the joys of getting older 🙈
