Anyone had coil removed after 6 years? What happened next?

6 years ago during peri menopausal hell, I had a Mirena coil fitted. I had a few very very light periods the first few years, then sometime 2-3 years ago, nothing. I then had very little bother from the Menopause.

I’m now 56, and I’ve had the Mirena for 6 years. I asked my practitioner about it last year and she was happy to leave it in for another year.

Now that year has passed and I’ll need to speak to her about it.

I’m reluctant to take it out because it has served me very well. I don’t want to go back to menopause hell. I’ve pretty much circumnavigated it and been very lucky.

Has anyone taken it out after 6 years, been menopausal (as in passed the menopause bit and it’s all stopped), and did anything happen, or any symptoms arise?

FYI I didn’t have HRT.

As far as I know you can continue to have them for the progesterone benefit until you are 90 if you so wish, in my area they change them more frequently for the progesterone than they do if you are using them for contraception. HRT is beneficial for as long as you take it, I plan on carrying on with mine forever in the belief that it's best for my bones and heart.

I'm in the same position @PlazzyScouser, I'm 56 too but I have had mine for 8 years this summer, when I rang 2 years ago to see if I should have it removed they said the new guidelines said 8 years if no problems.
Few meno symptoms and like you I suspect it has protected me from the worst. My mums menopause was terrible. I don't want it forever but I'm a bit scared to get it out. No HRT here either, but there can't be any progesterone left in it by now surely?
I have a date in my diary to ring again this Sumner.

If you’re not using it for HRT purposes we remove them at 57 as contraception no longer needed and you’re very unlikely to bleed.

Having a Mirena won’t affect menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, brain fog etc as they are influenced by oestrogen rather than progesterone, and you’re not receiving any oestrogen. So removal won’t affect any menopausal symptoms.

HRT can be beneficial for the heart and bones, but the OP isn’t on HRT so has no need for her Mirena coil now. There is no indication to leave it in and we don’t use Mirena alone for any HRT or menopausal reasons.

Ok, hopefully they’ll leave it in a bit longer then.

I just don’t want to take it out and feel crappy, start bleeding, go back to anxiety hell.

I’ve always had progesterone problems. I had a short luteal phase and had to have treatment to get pregnant, and assistance to keep the pregnancy in the first 3 months due to low progesterone.

When I got to the periM clearly everything went nuts, and the coil gave the progesterone I needed. Since I feel so great, I’d rather just leave it alone if I can.

I thought it was 5yrs for meno/hrt symptoms and 8yrs for contraception.

Wouldn't you get a new one OP?

I love mine and will keep renewing every 5yrs.
