Hi
anyone else still taking the combined pill after reaching 50 ?
I am 51 and still taking, been on Microgynon for over 10 years
back to back 3 packs at a time, and then get some spotting to stop , have a bleed and go back on. Doctors keep telling me to change to POP and patches.. dreading change over due to spotting, and all other problems i read about... want to stay on Microgynon long as I can but getting more difficult to get dr to give me prescription, I am aware of the risks, but not smoker, drinker and get blood pressure checked very 3 months.. can anyone give advice ? thanks

Why would you not, in all kindness, follow medical advice?

I take Cerazette. I'm 52. It's brilliant. No periods at all and it seems to have staved off most symptoms of the menopause.

It’s not worth the risk of DVT or PE
Why not consider a mirena coil .. it’s PO and may really help you through the next 5-7 years of menopause symptoms? Otherwise yes I’d definitely switch to POP.

I was on micogynon until I had dd. Doc refused to put me back on it because I was 36 and prescribed Norgestron.
Its been ok but I've gained weight with this one.
I'd say if your body is ok with it stick with it. Surely you'd have had issues by now if there were going to be any?
Pill option is taken away at 55 anyway.

I was put back on the pill at 51 because the combination of hrt I needed for my mental health made me bleed continuously. Going on the pill after a 3 month long period was a joy.

No more periods and stable mental health. Loving it.

No, there is no need for HRT patches.
Just take Cerazette every day. No breaks.
No spotting, no bleeding.

My sister is two years older than me but not on any pill and was absolutely floored once menopause hit her.
She had to go on HRT. I think she would have done herself harm otherwise.

My mother had an appalling menopause and cried and cried and cried and cried and cried and cried for about two years and had the most scorching mood swings. And was violent.
It was dreadful and made for a very unhappy homelife for us all.

Cerazette is what stopped the same thing happening to me.
I put an end to the curse that seems to be passed from mother to daugher in my family.

Noriday. It was what I previously took as a contraceptive.
Microgynon made me mad. I ended up not being able to go to work incase I hurt someone. I did have a colleague resign, partly because I was unbearable.

The medical advice on this often isn't brilliant via a GP. Taking the combined pill actually protects against against 3 types of cancer, and while it slightly increases breast cancer risk this is a low increase, and specifically the risk of taking post 50 is blood clots, not based on breast cancer per se, and that blood clot risk is very low if you are a healthy individual who doesn't smoke, no other health issues, healthy weight, etc. In some other countries (can't remember offhand) the advice is that it's fine to continue til 52-55.

For some women the protective effects against peri symptoms are major, and life changing, but honestly a lot of GPs don't understand or value those effects as extensively as they should, maybe because of their gender, or because menopause isn't given the gravitas it should.

54 here and on Desogestrel. No periods since taking it 8yrs ago.

SparklyBrickViper · 01/02/2026 09:32

I was on Yasmin, and my supplier refused to continue prescribing once I’d hit 50.

I’m now on Cerazette, similar to PP no bleeding, and whilst I have aches and pains no other meno symptoms (but I have got chronic stress at the moment). I’ve been told I can stay on Cerazette until 55.

Some GPs don't care.

And some actively set out to make women suffer.
