Lipomas

Has anyone had problems with lipomas during menopause

I'm 49 and been on HRT about a year. Just found out I've got a 4cm growth they think is a lipoma.

Some years ago during pregnancy I had a lipoma in the colon that grew and caused a bowel obstruction requiring surgery which was a bit of a nightmare as led to more surgery for adhesions afterwards.

So I'm a bit concerned about more lipomas although this one should be ok where it is

I'm wondering about a link with hormones and if I should potentially stop HRT

Where is this in your body? How was it found?

It's on my side, near the ribcage it's about 4cm, doesn't hurt I found it while putting on a bra.

They are going to monitor it - I need to go back in a few weeks

Yes I had a lipoma on my back that I’d had for years but it got a lot bigger during menopause. I ended up having the lipoma removed at London skin clinic on Harley street under local anaesthetic. Was pretty painless and was back at work next day . Scar is fine

I’ve got 3, only had one looked at but they won’t remove it.

Yes, I had one. I first noticed it in my 40s because I was exercising and trying to lose weight but noticed that an area on one side of my abdomen wasn’t responding to exercise. It was like a bulge of fat. I showed my GP who squished it and pulled it around and she called it a “fatty lump” with no advice given. I assumed the “fatty lump” was layman’s speech for “spare tyre” or just fat that would go away with continued exercise. Time passed and I got used to it. I developed worse problems anyway, not related to that (fibroids and subsequent hysterectomy) and steady weight gain until I saw in a full length mirror that this “fatty lump” was looking really obvious. It was bulging over waist bands. I asked Gp if it could be cancerous and was sent for scan. It wasn’t, so the nhs told me it’s just a benign lump of fat and you can leave it alone. Like hell I was. I went private and it was just under the skin, sitting on top of normal fat and muscle, 10 cms and getting bigger. I asked my surgeon what caused these and she couldn’t really give me a straight answer.

I’ve had a 5-6cm benign lipoma on my upper thigh for several years. Could anybody be share how must it costs to get something like this removed and a clinic they’d recommend?

HatStickBoots · 02/08/2026 15:18

I just did a search for private lipoma removal in my county @over50andfab and then contacted the clinic which had surgeons who perform these type of operations. They usually display their fees on the website too. I sent an email explaining what I had and was then asked to send photos and details of the scan i’d had on the nhs. We went from there. I had to have a full anaesthetic because of where mine was and a night in hospital which added to the expense but yours might be simpler and only require a local anaesthetic and discharge the same day.
