Fucking hell I miss alcohol

I really really fucking miss it. I WISH I could drink wine like I did in my 30s and 40s with no hangover and no problem with the sulfites

one Glass of wine now and I have a headache for about 20 hours !

So I switched to a clear spirit and lemonade, can’t tolerate that now. Ffs 🤦‍♀️

WHEN CAN I DRINK AGAIN??? Do you get back to it after cunting menopause ?!?

I don’t know but I empathise. Haven’t been able to drink wine for YEARS.

RazedBeds · 28/01/2026 19:22

I bought some little teabags things that claim to remove sulphites from your wine. I am not sure if they work as I am still circumspect but they are worth a try? I would also recommend a French wine over New World (California, Australia, New Zealand) wines. They seem to be less likely to trigger my particular reaction (waking with anxiety and racing heart).

For me it's the hours of burning acid reflux after any drink, preventing any sleep.

It's just not worth it.

Cappie73 · 28/01/2026 19:25

Doing dry January and wondering why I the hell I bother drinking, the giggly tipsy feeling is just not worth it for feeling depressed and shit sleep for days on end whilst trying to get it out of your system

LaurieFairyCake · 28/01/2026 19:27

Oh yeah it’s ALL the negative affects - burning acid, anxiety, no sleep so even a couple of drinks make you look like a grey ill addict the next day 😟

Beer?
I’m better with beer especially if it’s low alcohol one.
I’ve also noticed that I can’t do a few days in a row even if it’s just a large glass of wine.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/01/2026 19:32

Too gassy 🤢 not an attractive look on me (used to love real ale)

I have found that cocktails are a lot better for me to be honest and using a decent quality of spirit in them.

Would also recommend an aperol spritz 🍸🍹

I really enjoyed a non alcoholic sparkling wine the other day. This is what my life has come to. God I miss the first sip of properly chilled Sauvignon

CountFucula · 28/01/2026 21:13

Cider - posh, mind - not special brew. That is ok for me - can have a couple. One glass of red is my limit and it has to be before 7pm or I’ll be up at 4 am with the DREAD.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 28/01/2026 21:16

I’ll be six years sober in August, and I still get the urge for a glass of cold Sauvignon Blanc when I’m eating mussels.

I don’t think it’ll ever leave me.

Waitingfordoggo · 29/01/2026 08:54

I’ve given up on wine completely and don’t miss it as it’s been so long. I now only drink beer, cider or a cocktail and only two or three times a year. Just been on holiday where I had a beer with my lunch most days which was pleasant. On one day I had a few spicy margaritas which was great fun at the time but felt like a huge mistake the next day.

I am also better with beer, not lager but bitter. The one I drink has no additives, all natural ingredients and is fairly low in alcohol. It hits the spot and is not gassy! (Greene King IPA)

A lot of wine has sulphites so, as well as alcohol, this can give you a headache.

BadgernTheGarden · 29/01/2026 10:40

You can get wines with no added sulphites (search on line) if you have sulphite intolerance.

JacknDiane · 30/01/2026 10:29

We were on holiday a few years ago and went into a local Italian and had a lovely meal. I was high on that holiday feeling ( it was only Northumberland but I don't get out much) and decided to have a glass of rose wine , with lots of ice cubes. One glass. The next day was ruined. I really should have known better, I haven't been able to touch wine for years.

ChurchWindows · 30/01/2026 10:51

Since the menopause the only way I can handle alcohol is to drink every day and build up some kind of tolerence. That's obviously a crap way to go and every day I started to feel more lethargic, greyer, slower and creakier.

I just gave up. I feel so much better but I miss it like an old friend. That lovely Friday feeling of somewhere there being a chilled glass of wine waiting for me.
