Experience of utrogestan

I’ve been given utrogestan and am taking 100mg x 2 per se for 14 days vaginally.

My period which was semi regular pre HRT (only been on it since 23/12) was delayed by a few days which I expected. However I’m not sure what to expect in terms of heaviness. So far (on day 2) it’s quite a bit lighter than usual. Is that normal? Or is it a case of anything is normal to begin with?

I don’t love not knowing what to expect - I’m a bit worried about suddenly leaking everywhere or something!

Just started HRT myself, so not much help but i’d think anything is normal at this point until it settles in.
i am about to start my first round of utrogesten, an am bit worried as i have read on here some people have bad side affects. Did you had any issues?

kirinm · 11/01/2026 12:37

@AnxietyCamI've not noticed any side effects at all - other than possibly vivid dreams but I only picked that up from someone who posted about that on MN.

The only thing is a slightly delayed period and it not being as it usually is.

It gave me quite bad stomach cramps but fortunately I just had to take it as a stop gap while waiting for my Mirena to be replaced.

I enjoyed the good night’s sleep I got from utrogestan and had no negative side effects, but unfortunately had to stop it when I went on Mirena coil instead.

Did you get side effects from the coil?

I love it - I can finally sleep again and it helps with middle of the night anxiety.

I have only had it for 3 months so it’s early days. I’ve actually found it find so far, only issue is daily light spotting (not at as much as a period but enough to need a liner ) , but I’m aware this is normal for up to 6 months so I’m waiting to see how it goes . No other side effects so far and I didn’t find insertion too bad at all . I had been really worried about acne and haven’t experienced that so far, which I’m really pleased about.

Spotting is annoying though?

My period has been much lighter than usual (which is good) but it’s lasting longer than usual (which is less good)!

I was fine on utrogestan for 2 years but then it started to give me terrible reflux. I have now switched to the Mirena which was a nightmare for the first 4 months but symptoms are finally starting to settle.
