Shampoo and body moisturiser recommendations in perimeno

Just that really. I'm tired of looking drab and dreary. I have fine hair in a bob, which I no longer colour (greying at temples), hair so fine it sometimes looks like I'm balding on zooms and in photos. Added to this I have a sometimes super itchy scalp which Head and Shoulders seems to alleviate sometimes. But does no other favours for my hair overall. I have super flyaway static hair, but conditioner tends to weigh hair down and make aforementioned balding look worse.

Also have noticed an increase in dry flaky skin all over towards the end of the day.

What are your favourite shampoos, tips for conditioners (eg is moroccanoil treatment mist a good option as conditioner alternative?) I use a shampoo massage brush thingy. Any fave body moisturisers that really work?

And all of the above not breaking the bank or destroying the environment 🤔

My GP friend recommended Aveeno body moisturizer. Haircare wise, I get on best with sulphate free shampoo bars rather than liquid shampoo. Sorry I can’t recall the brand but any seem to do.

I have experienced a really itchy scalp on and off, to the point I was convinced I had nits (I didn't!) I use Keune derma sensitive shampoo and it's sorted it out. It's not cheap but you don't need a lot, and I was trying so many other brands that didn't work, it's worth it for me.

I have quite wiry hair so also use their Keratin shampoo, but have found if I use it too often, along with moroccan oil etc my hair looks flat and greasy, which it never used to.

I use E45 lightweight moisturiser on my body which doesn't make me itch and sinks in really easily. I used to use Aveeno oat (I think?) but it has an undertone whiff of fish to me, so I don't use it. (it probably doesn't, my sense of smell since getting into peri has been weird)

I have similar hair. I use the clear T-Gel (salicylic acid) twice a week, and head and shoulders moisturising shampoo otherwise. I use pantene thickening conditioner because I need the silicones!

L'Oréal Dream Lengths blow dry cream is the absolute saver of my wavy frizzy hair. It says for blow dried long hair, but it's the only thing that keeps mine tamed without being flat and heavy. I love the stuff.

I tried a couple of shampoo bars, I really love the lack of packaging and the fact that they are sls free but the itching got worse (I've also checked for nits more than once!!) for some reason and I went back to Head and Shoulders. I've wondered about T-gel so I'm going to give that a go thanks!

I used to use e45 cream when I was younger, I might give that a go too

I hardly ever blow dry (I like to think drying naturally gives me less flat beach hair but actually it's just mess 😆). Do you mean you use Dream Lengths without blow drying and it works?

Leaving your hair to dry naturally will mean more likely to have dry itch scalp. Imagine leavibg your body to dry naturally and then not moisturising. My legs would be very flaky and itchy.

I use cerave on body and as a night cream on my face. Aveeno and hydrocortisone on my hands and excema patches.

Sunday shampoo and conditioner is lovely. Not very scented either.

I do! I put it in regardless of whether I am blow-drying (with a cheapo air dry round brush) or just leaving it as is. Just a small squeeze.

E45 shampoo for very dry and itchy scalps has worked for me better than all those tar shampoos. It's only a fiver on Amazon. I got the random flaky scalp too.

Do you use anything like a moisturiser on your scalp? I like the idea of a scalp moisturiser but also have oily roots after a day - most conditioners are for length of hair not scalp, aren't they?

Actually, no I don't 😬

But I do know that my head gets really itchy if I don't blow dry the roots at least.

I have excema so for many years I've used sls free shampoo which makes a difference too.

Interesting post OP. Thanks everyone for the replies. I’m similar, have improved my hair and general dryness by using a co-cleanser rather than shampoo, but I have a patch of eczema on my scalp as well. I’ve just bought Nizoral which does seem to have helped, I think the Neutrogena T-gel is good for scalp but not really for hair! I think what they say about treating the scalp is true - if cell turnover slows down, we probably do need to exfoliate our scalps to keep them healthy!

You might be using way too much conditioner - I discovered I was - now using less than 5p size only on lengths. Then a ‘menopause’ hair mask now and then - which does help. I always use a blow dry spray as I blow dry daily. My hair is incredibly fine and getting finer, but I believe it is healthy at least!

GellerYeller · 03/01/2026 13:42

I agree with SLS free shampoo. I use Charles Worthington. I haven’t tried it yet but they do a menopause range.

muddyford · 03/01/2026 14:19

I'm using the Aveda hair oil after washing but before drying. You only need the tiniest drop and it smooths the different texture of the grey hair and gives it a shine.

Thank you! Do you use a particular scalp exfoliant? Sounds blissful actually, wish I had a stylist to wash, exfoliate and treat every week Smile

Also which hair mask would you recommend for fine flyaway hair?

I wonder if yoghurt would help 😄

on hair I use the Kinkind rice protein bars. But my big recommendation for body is a silk mitt scrub in the shower followed by Elizabeth Arden 8 hour body lotion.

The mask is Charles Worthington Menoplex. I dare say it’s partly gimmick/placebo, but it does seem to help and is the best I’ve tried. I’ve just bought a Nizoral one though - not very glam!

I use an Umberto Giannini scrub from the Grow Long range - I think the brand makes a couple of different ones. I really like it, it seems to be gentle and thorough. I also sometimes use the pineapple scalp exfoliator - I put it on then sit in the bath as you have to keep it on for ten mins or so.
