Bedding recommendations - night sweats

Night sweats… the worst… I’ve been on HRT for about 3 years, max dose on patches. I switched to a tablet to see if it made any difference but it hasn’t and have reverted back to patches as there are more risks with the tablets

Is there anything anyone can recommend or suggest though? I’ve got cotton sheets and covers, but should I go super luxury and higher thread count? Will this help? What about a different sort of duvet - I have a ‘normal’ duvet, but is there anything out there worth trying?

It’s unbearable. I’m waking up 2-3 times a night drenched in sweat…

I have a fan on and the window open and sleep naked but I still sweat excessively overnight

Thank you!

We have a wool duvet and it's been amazing, highly recommend. My partner used to sweat a lot and our bedding needed changed all the time and it's really reduced his sweating. Ours is from soak and sleep, was pricy but they do sales a lot and it would have been a bargain at half the price

Have you tried cooling towels, they.are cheap as chips on amazon and made a huge difference to me. You just run them under cold water and wring them out then just put round your neck or under your boob's. They really help.

Oh really? You would think that wool would have the opposite effect! I’ll look into this- thank you! Do they keep you warm/cold depending on seasons? I’ll do some research. Thank you ☺️

I’ve never heard of them! I’ll take a look though, thank you!

I have a wool duvet- I have not found any benefit. I also have Egyptian cotton bedding- lovely but again has made no difference.

Monsteraplants · 29/12/2025 13:28

Tencel bedding greatly helped me.

Wordless · 29/12/2025 13:31

Wool duvet and linen duvet cover / sheets.

You’re welcome!

JinglingSpringbells · 29/12/2025 15:05

If you're on the max dose of HRT you should not be having night sweats like this. Are you on a 100mcg patch?

It may be worth considering switching to estrogen gel to see if you absorb it better.
What progesterone are you using with the patch?

Have you had a blood test (not for HRT levels) but for other things?
There are some serious illnesses that can cause this sweating so they need ruling out.

Ministerofmumbles · 29/12/2025 15:07

I agree with above post. If they are the sort of sweats that you’re having to change your nightclothes and sheets, then definitely get to the GP.

mippis · 29/12/2025 19:02

Sage tablets stopped my night sweats straight away. Not more night sweats.

bumphousebump · 29/12/2025 19:16

Wool duvet here, made a massive difference for me. Recommended it to friends who also found a change to wool duvet helped. Regulated my temperature. Also…not drinking alcohol.

Here to agree re wool duvets! I have terrible night sweats and wool duvets were absolute game changer- highly recommend!!

Periperi2025 · 03/01/2026 19:26

I have a cotton sheet, 1 tog down duvet in cotton cover, then a high tog down duvet that i can pull over if needed. I have a fan running all year, blowing over me so that i can flip the covers off if my torso feels like it is burning until it subsides.

AnnaMagnani · 03/01/2026 19:28

Wool duvet is excellent (I have one) but I can still wake up sweaty if my HRT is too low.

What nightwear are you wearing? Ideally it should be made of a wicking fabric such as Coolmax. Bamboo fabric also works.

When my DF had severe night sweats from his cancer I bought him an entire set of Coolmax bedlinen - sheets, pillows, duvet everything. He loved it so much he insisted on taking it all into hospital with him.

You will see pure cotton recommended - avoid it, it just ends up cold and claggy next to your skin.

Periperi2025 · 03/01/2026 19:30

How old are you? If you are premature ovarian insufficiency or early menopause then it is not uncommon to need more than 100mcg oestrogen. I am on 200mcg. Unfortunetly in many areas you would have to self fund the additional dose over 100mcg and the private consultation you need to get it prescribed.

Branleuse · 03/01/2026 19:33

Get a wool duvet. It's made a big difference to me, as it keeps me at the perfect temperature.
My previous duvet used to make me get boiling, and then I'd sweat and it was really affecting my sleep.
I got a wool duvet from amazon and a wool pillow and I bloody love it

GaladrielHiggins · 03/01/2026 19:36

I have a cool gel pad that seems to work, got it for less than £10 in Aldi last week

wakeboarder · 03/01/2026 19:37

Definitely try wearing cotton pyjamas and socks. I know this sounds counter productive as you'd think you'd be hotter than wearing nothing. I read this tip several years ago on Mumsnet and it really makes a difference. I think it's because if you sweat the cotton absorbs the sweat rather than it having nowhere to go and you end up cold because of the sweating. Anyway I tried this recommendation and it worked for me , so worth a go. Also wool duvets are good as already suggested .

cheeseonsofa · 03/01/2026 19:50

Linen bed linen
However I would ask for Thyroid work up if the HRT isn't working plus nights sweats can be a sign of some underlying diseases.
Are they specifically only at night?

I also have a sweaty partner and wool duvet which is fantastic. I’d also recommend linen bed linen - it’s very breathable and light (but still cosy, somehow!).

Imgoingtobefree · 08/01/2026 11:48

I went down to a flimsy 3tog winter and summer. I also take gel packs that I keep in the fridge to bed with me to cool me down. Back of the neck is best.

I remember the worst of it well. Waking boiling hot covered in sweat, then waking again freezing cold because covers thrown off but covered now in cold sweat. In the end you are just so so tired.

If I was there again, I’d look at my diet. But I always feel so much better when I’m eating healthy.

Hippolata · 08/01/2026 11:54

Any recommendations for a mattress topper that doesn't cause night sweating?

user593 · 08/01/2026 12:11

@Hippolata I haven’t personally tried one but I know they make wool mattress toppers - I think that would be a fairly safe bet.
