Mirena coil + utrogestan?

I've been on the waiting list for the mirena for a long time, essentially to control heavy periods and menopause symptoms. I have just been told I've got to the top of the list and had an appointment offered to have one fitted

In the meantime, I've actually got to a pretty balanced place with 200mg utrogestan daily + 100mg estrogen patch. Its continuous despite having periods because cyclical was irritating my migraines. I'm feeling much better now on continuous HRT.

I still have a monthly bleed despite the 200mg daily utrogestan. GP thought adding mirena coil might stop me ovulating, so stop the fluctuating hormones, remaining migraines and hot flushes I only get the week before my period.

Ideally, I would prefer to stop having a cycle, but I'm also a bit wary of messing with things now I'm fairly stable.

I've actually had 3 mirena coils in the past (5 years, 3 years, 1 year), I didn't get on with them and had them taken out early, but it was so long ago I've forgotten why !

Just wondered if anyone has tried mirena + utrogestan. Does it stop the actual ovulatory cycle like my GP suggests? Or just stop the bleeding? How bad are the first 6 months with a mirena? I vaguely recall bleeding a lot and feeling my mood was unstable...

Do you mind me asking why you would need the utrogestan? I had a similar issue and now don’t take any utrogestan and just get my progesterone from the coil. The bleeding settled for me
after a month or two and is all now nice and calm. Complete change.

I haven’t tried the combination of them, but I’m one of the unlucky ones who gets a period every month with the Mirena. Intermittent now that I’m in peri, but still get bad PMT, even if I don’t bleed. It’s beneficial in other ways for me, but I think it does vary from person to person. I had a lot of the bleeding in the first six months with my initial one, but not subsequent one.

Thanks for the replies.

I think my GP's reasoning behind using both was that I also found the mirena didn't stop my periods previously, and had very bad PMS and migraines with it. So she thought shutting my cycle off altogether would be better.

I've found all progesterone except utrogestan to be absolutely awful, but utrogestan suits me really well. I just feel calmer and sleep better if I take it at a consistent level.

So the bit she is trying to fix is the actual period now.

I think the alternative would be Zoley, but it feels like a bit of a wild card, since I'm basically stable now - just not the week before my period where it all comes back.

My periods had actually kind of tailed off before I started HRT, they were incredibly light for a few years. I assume its the estrogen which has started the flow back up again. They're very heavy and long now.

I get it op. I also haven’t tolerated any progesterone well either apart from utragesteron. Tho if the mirena made your moods not great I would question how long term that option will be for you. My consultant also slightly reduced my eostrogen from 100 to something closer to 80 and I use a lonzetto spray rather than patches now. Worth considering slightly tweaking the eostrogen as well?
