A period after 11 months - this can't be happening

SirChenjins · 04/12/2025 06:53

I thought that was it - 11 months of no periods at almost 57, but no, the fucker has just reappeared. Does this mean I have to go back to the beginning and hope that I won't have another one for 12 months?

I could actually cry. I honestly thought I was at the menopause this time.

I can sympathise.

I was up to 6 months & really hoped that was it, but mine’s back too.

Bastard.

SirChenjins · 04/12/2025 07:03

Sending ypu sympathies @EmpressaurusKitty - it's just not fair.

This happened to me too after 11 months but turns out it was a last hurrah-lasted a couple of days and that was it thank goodness.

Fingers crossed it’s the same for you.

FrauDoktor · 04/12/2025 07:11

This happened to me but it was very slight bleeding so I had to get it checked out. I was sent for a scan and the uterine lining was fine. They did want to check it though as it was almost 12 months.

Namechangedasouting987 · 04/12/2025 07:13

I had this after 10 months, and then again after another 10 months. Nothing since. My sympathies!

HelloCharming · 04/12/2025 07:23

I went and got it checked out. It was nothing, but they still wanted a scan etc.

Thanks @SirChenjins. One of the most annoying bits IMO is never being sure if or when it’s coming.

FrauDoktor · 04/12/2025 07:35

Have you had COVID recently @sirchenjins?that's what triggered mine.

EmpressaurusKitty · 04/12/2025 07:43

I’ve had a rotten cold that might have been Covid though I didn’t test. I wonder if that’s what triggered mine.

OllyBJolly · 04/12/2025 07:46

I had that - 12 months almost to the day after the last one! Full blown with cramps for a full five days. I was 51 so a bit earlier. Thankfully other meno symptoms were pretty inconsequential so don't feel I can complain.

dudsville · 04/12/2025 07:46

Sending you my sympathies from the other side. I remember counting down those months with so much hope!

JinglingSpringbells · 04/12/2025 08:08

It might be best to see your GP and be referred for a scan.
57 is getting on a bit to have a period (range is 45-55) and yes, there are women who go later than that but it's unusual.

If you were younger it could be acceptable but at 57 you do need it checking out.

SirChenjins · 04/12/2025 09:38

Sympathies to you all - I feel your pain. I'll mention it to the GP but it's a normal period that started in the usual way with the usual ovulation symptoms a couple of weeks ago (that I chose to pretend weren't happening) so hopefully it's just a blip. So annoying.

CheeseIsMyIdol · 04/12/2025 09:43

I think that happened to me around 55-56. It wasn’t a big deal.

mondaytosunday · 04/12/2025 09:47

I had a last surprise period after about eight months of nothing. I had just turned 55 or 56. Last one though! I had a symptomless menopause thank goodness as my mother had a dreadful time. I really hope there is better relief when it’s my DD’s (20) turn.

Seeline · 04/12/2025 09:57

I got to 9 months, twice!

SirChenjins · 04/12/2025 10:13

I've got to a few months on a few occasions, but this was do close I could see the finish line - I really thought I was there this time! The last few periods each lasted weeks and were a bloodbath, I can't face that again.

I agree @mondaytosunday hopefully by the time it's the turn of the younger women they'll have better symptom control or relief.

You could always consider the Mirena coil, especially if you ever want HRT where it's the progestogen part of it. At the very least your GP should prescribe Tranexamic acid tablets to reduce the flow of a heavy period if it happens again.

NebulousSupportPostcard · 04/12/2025 10:18

I'm so sorry. I got close several times before the floodgates reopened. I am 18 months free and hopefully clear now, but still half expect it to start up again because it all went on so bloody long.

Radiatorvalves · 04/12/2025 10:20

My cousin told me hers returned for a final hurrah in her early 60s. I’m praying I don’t follow her example. It’s been about 3 months and I’m nearly 55. Fed up of blood baths and what’s worse is that they are always unexpected and invariably hit when I’m away. I’ve got tampons hidden everywhere… little talismen… I’ll be finding them forever.

HostaCentral · 04/12/2025 10:25

I'm 59. Still not in menopause. Just had my Hysteroscopy to check everything OK. I had a break from HRT, and want to go back on. GP is checking everything OK before she prescribes. am one of the outliers! Consultant said everything looks OK, just have to wait for a biopsy results.

Fingers crossed I get the all clear. The night sweats are horrendous.

blobby10 · 04/12/2025 10:30

I feel your pain - we are the same age and I think thanks to the coil (that has to come out asap as its been in 8 years) my periods have got lighter and more manageable for the last few years but still regular. Over this summer I went 80 days before a couple of days of spotting, not even wiping blood, which has set the timer going again but I'm really hoping I'm on the final home straight. Not really had many symptoms either which I'm thankful for having read some horror stories on here.

marilyntaylor · 04/12/2025 10:34

At the age of 53 after 13 months of no periods I had my final period. If I remember correctly it was fairly light and painless. I’m now 65 and have had nothing since.

SirChenjins · 04/12/2025 10:37

Oh my goodness - so many of us in the same boat! Much sympathy/empathy to you all. I have boxes of tranexemic acid in the cupboard and was on progesterone (won't have the mirena) which definitely helped - hopefully it's not necessary this time though. Also had scans and a hysteroscopy plus biopsy - all clear luckily.

OP posts:
SirChenjins · 08/12/2025 18:17

So my period lasted about 48 hours and never really got going. Does this still count- do I really need to go back to the start and start counting 12 months again?!
