Menopause feels like it’s over, but can I / should I still ask for HRT to improve health whilst aging, I’m only 62 … appreciate other women’s experience, would GP give me it

A friend of mine went on it at this age to hopefully prevent dementia, as her mum has it

Yes for me it stopped insomnia. Dry skin and hair . Mood lifted as did brain fog

It supports your bones and heart health, so I’d be looking at it for that alone.
My friend said she was having symptoms to get it from her GP, not sure if they would give it just because you want it, even though it helps prevent problems in the future.

HRT should be started before the age of 60 if you want to protect your bones and cardiac health

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate as according to the Menopause Charity

There is very little evidence regarding starting HRT for older women because this research has not been undertaken. However, most women who are otherwise fit and well do still gain benefits from taking HRT even if it has been more than 10 years since their menopause.

there’s no or mixed evidence that it helps dementia. Any positive evidence seems to point towards taking it during peri.

the much larger evidence base points towards exercise, resistance training (esp legs) and many other things like arts and crafts, relaxation and spending time with friends

some evidence for b vitamins taken alongside omega 3 (the VITACOG trial.)

@bigsisteriswatchingyou Quite a variety of responses here for you!

You can't ask for HRT to 'prevent ageing' because it depends what you mean. You have to have meno symptoms or risk factors for your bones.

1 You can start HRT over 60.

2 The benefits to your heart are best if started within 10 years of your final period- so for some women that could mean up to age 65 (or even slightly older.) More than 10 years after your final period the heart benefits aren't as great

3 HRT is licensed for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis over age 60. It can be used earlier if you are at risk or have been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis . However, if you have no menopause symptoms and no risk factors for osteoporosis (based on a DEXA scan) it's not usually given as prevention.
