Itchy mouth?

Has anyone had an itchy mouth as a symptom of perimenopause? Mine is driving me mad at the moment - tongue and roof of the mouth. I don’t know whether it is peri-related - no other definite symptoms at the moment - but had a quick google which suggests that it could be.

If anyone has had similar and can suggest something that helps, I’d be so grateful.

Not itchy as such but my mouth tends to be quite sensitive and dry, with a sore or burning sensation at times.
I tried Oralieve mouth spray which did help a bit but it's expensive. I now use Ricola sugar-free pastilles a few times a day - from Holland and Barratt or Sainsbury's in a little cardboard box duspenser, the peppermint ones are the best for helping my mouth to feel more normal again.

Also not itchy but my tongue gets really sore. My cheeks seem bigger internally so I keep biting them and my gums..I get a really dry mouth too which makes the soreness even worse, and

Oh God yes, it drives me mad now and then!

It doesn't always happen but when it does, it's difficult to stop, even if I eat something.

I had no idea it might be caused by peri but it makes sense, since every bloody other thing I'm going through seems to be!

Yes, well swollen, it feels like I’ve had a lip job. I asked my dentist who said it is a menopause symptom called burning mouth

FirstCuppa · 04/11/2025 23:16

I had a swollen tongue that got so big my teeth caused cuts to the edges on both sides. Despite several GPs trying to tell me my jaw was too small, one even suggesting I go to the dentist and ask for surgery to widen it (!) it was actually a B12 deficiency. I also got weird buzzy feelings, that I'd align with "itching". Worth getting a blood test.

Interesting! I hadn’t thought about B12 or read anything about that so that’s worth asking.

I asked the dentist yesterday and he suggested gargling with warm salt water - not sure whether this is a remedy or just something that will do no harm! However, gave it a go before bed yesterday and the roof of my mouth is smoother this morning. It’s not gone, but it’s a bit better, so worth trying.

I have the itchy mouth too. Roof and sides near the gums. It comes and goes. I keep blaming allergies but I think it is just down to the menopause.
