Contraception in peri

Orangesandlemons77 · 31/10/2025 19:26

What are you using for this in peri please? Going to speak to the GPs next week about it.

I'm on HRT (oestrogen and oral progesterone for two weeks out of four) have a retroverted womb so unsure about eg. the mirena) Thanks

I have a recovered uterus and have had Mirena since peri. Means I am on continuous oestrogen.

Thanks maybe that would be a possibility for me too.

Nothing as husband has done the honourable thing and had a vasectomy 😀

Yes, I have suggested this with no luck so far! He does say he will use condoms though, but don't fancy that really myself.

I'm on the mini pill. No HRT though. Nurse says to stay on it till 55 just to be safe.

Obviously I meant retroverted uterus, not recovered 😆

JinglingSpringbells · 01/11/2025 10:43

@Orangesandlemons77 You can use the mini pill WITH Hrt.

In fact you can triple up on the dose of the mini pill and it works as the progesterone part of HRT (you might need your GP to explore this- it's 'allowed' but not all GPs know.)

Thanks, I think I would prefer the progesterone HRT I'm already on, although taking something once daily might be easier to remember I suppose.

I'm going to try to get an appt with a GP who has an interest in this area and see what they say.

When there was a shortage of HRT (especially Utrogestan) the BMS produced a guide on alternative options (this was a few years ago.) One option was 3 x Noriday (POP). This info is till online on their website.

I was offered it as an option (nothing to do with the shortage.)

I don't see why any decent husband would expect his wife to stay on a hormonal contraceptive until 55 (increased cancer risks and the many other side effects) when he can have a quick and simple procedure (vasectomy).

Vasectomies come with some risks as well.

There is always the possibility that a man may have more children with a new partner. It's not unheard of for men to 'start again' even in their 50s with a younger woman. I know someone who did just that - 2 more children at 50+ with a wife 15 years younger.

Hormonal contraception isn't the only choice.

What a cheery thought.. can you imagine men saying no to one because they’re thinking ahead to their imaginary younger wife 😂

3teens2cats · 02/11/2025 08:24

I've had a mirena for 19 yrs so made sense to just continue with that and it fulfils the progesterone part of my hrt. No bleeding at all which is great. I'm not going to embrace my natural hormones so a vasectomy is unnecessary surgery in our situation.

Not all relationships end because of divorce. There are many cases of men wanting reversals.

Mrsnothingthanks · 02/11/2025 09:24

@Disturbia81 They wouldn't but that's the most likely scenario! Why else would an older couple - say 42 and 48 - need a reversal?

Orangesandlemons77 · 02/11/2025 10:45

I could get the copper coil but that made my periods heavy in the past. Took the morning after pill last week but don't want to do that again really.

I'm nearly 49 so possibly overkill but need to be careful

I doubt I'd be taking it to 55 just until menopause? I support it could be until then though. Is the mini pill so risky at this age?

Rowgtfc72 · 02/11/2025 11:14

@Mrsnothingthanks dh is 9 years younger than me. I wouldn't deprive him of a second family if anything happened to me.
Also the progesterone is helping with perimenopause symptoms.
I'm taking it by choice.

@Orangesandlemons77 The guidance on contraception is that women need it to 54 OR 1 year after your last period (if you're over 50 then) or for 2 years after your last period if you're under 50.

Obviously using hormonal contraception makes it hard to know when your periods are over but you could always take a break from those types at 50 and use other methods to find out.

Mrsnothingthanks · 02/11/2025 14:00

@Rowgtfc72 Totally get that. I was was referring to older couples. I was 41 when DH had the snip and he was 45 - I have three bio children and he has one (the daughter we share). So we were clearly done at our ages. I am sure so many couples are the same age-wise so not sure what stops men?

It depends, surely.
I know of two couples at least where, many years after being divorced, the men married women who were single, no children and they had babies together. The men were close to or over 50 when that happened and the women, late 30s. It's more common than they might think for men to have families 2nd time around, either because of divorce of bereavement.
Vasectomy is very final (although some reversals work) so a man has to be 100% sure he'd never want another child under any circumstances.

Mrsnothingthanks · 02/11/2025 15:53

@JinglingSpringbells My husband is almost 50, with one 5 yo that we share, and has been married twice (I'm his second wife). So he knows he is categorically done! Both him and I share the belief that more children at our ages now (45 and 49) wouldn't be fair or reasonable, even with new partners. I also have two older sons - 18 and 15 and one day looking forward to being a grandma!!!
He recognises that it is not a fair expectation on me to be on a hormonal contraceptive for another decade, having been taking the minipill since 17, with only a break for pregnancies. When I sat down and thought about it I'd been on it pretty much for almost 25 years - that's a long time. It was never going to be the case that I was on it for another decade and increasing my risks/suffering side effects for a very, very, very tiny "what if." I am fortunate in that my husband respects that and doesn't leave contraceptive responsibility to me alone.
I am definitely now peri but still feel so much better for not being on the minipill; I don't think I appreciated how much the side effects were impacting upon me.
We have found his vaesecomy has been very liberating for both of us and one less thing to ever need worry about ❤️

Orangesandlemons77 · 02/11/2025 17:23

I'm veering towards the mirena and thinking it might lighten my periods, despite the retroverted uterus

Are the hormones more focused on that area does anyone know?
