Non stop period

Looking to see if anyone else has experienced this - I’ve always been lucky with regular and not too heavy periods.

I’m 46 now and shifted in the past few months to 21 day cycles rather than 30, which was ok. Then had a late period this month (prob 35 days) and have now bled for 3 weeks since it started. Not heavily every day but enough.

Is this fairly typical? Do I need to seek advice?

Definitely get advice, I would call 111 or see if you can get a gp appointment.

Could well just be peri fuckery, but its unusual and bleeding outside of your period needs to be checked out just to rule out anything sinister. You'll probably be asked if you are up to date with your smear tests etc

Could be fibroids (benign but annoying). Do get checked out and don’t be fobbed off. If they try to tell you it’s normal say it’s not normal for you.

Yes I had this, started about your age, went on for a few years. Utterly miserable, accompanied by bad flooding. Nothing sinister, started continuous progesterone and no problems since.

I was similar.

Very regular periods around 31 days, decreased to 28 days in my later 40's.

I had a very long, very heavy bleed at just turned 49. Around 3 weeks, small clots, flooding etc. I had transemic acid from the GP and it tailed off and my periods settled down to around every 25 days.

I had another very long, very heavy bleed a few months after my 50th.
Again transmic acid but it wasn't as helpful - the bleeding slowed, stopped for a few days, restarted, stopped etc.

I recall emptying my mooncup before going to pick my son up frlm an explore camp and flooding through my mooncup, pad, pants & jeans into the car seat before I completed the 15 minute journey. I sat on a rug driving home.

I was referred for an ultrasound after about 6 weeks.
Ultrasound showed thickening of the Endometrial lining and I was referred to the gyne clinic.

Gyne clinic did a hysterscopy, identifed a smallish fibroid, took a biopsy and fitted a Mirena coil.
Biopsy confirmed thickening, but no malignancy.
I bleed lightly for the first few months of the Mirena, but once that settled I had no periods (although could still tell I was ovulating, menstrual type symptoms etc for a couple of years, these died down around my 53rd birthday earlier this year).

Definitely get checked out by the GP and don't be fobbed off, this is not normal for you and even if investigations confirm it is just peri symptoms, you should be offered treatment options to help.

And do it asap because there are insane waits for gynaecology - I have just this morning been told by my GP it’s 40 weeks in my area, and even if it’s bearable now it might not be by the time you get to the top of the list.

Oh that's awful.
Mine was late 2022.
My ultrasound wait was about 6 weeks and followup Gynae appointment a further 6 weeks.

If there is anything that makes them put you on a cancer pathway it’s much quicker.

Ah, that makes sense!

I started HRT last month with similar - went from 28 day cycle to 21 and terrible migraines and inconsistent bleeding - my last one was 5 days of brown for eg (sorry tmi). I'm hopeful the HRT will sort this out but I also found out last week I have a few fibroids and a small cyst which also might not be helping. Good to get a scan to rule out anything sinister.

Thanks everyone, been reading all your very helpful responses. It seems to have finally tailed off after 3 ish weeks and will be seeking medical advice. My sister has had similar for a few years and tried transxemic acid but hasn’t been much help for her either.
