Oestrogel and lack of sleep

Hi, I’ve been out on the coil and Oestrogel. It’s been six weeks and my sleep has completely gone to pot! I used to sleep well on femiston tablets, but have been changed to coil and gel. But I now cannot sleep! Waking up at 1 or 3 am every night. Was on two pumps, go has said to take three now and to give it 2-3 months to settle. What time should I apply the gel? Is it best to apply in morning or night to better help my sleep. I feel like I’m going mad! Thanks

I take the gel and then a tablet (instead of the coil). My sleep changed overnight from sleeping 5 hours to suddenly sleeping through. It was a miracle. Sorry, that’s no help but it can work. Take a magnesium tablet and put the gel on right before bed. Are you checking where you apply it? It’s quite specific areas to be absorbed.

Hi , I put the gel on my inner thighs. I’ve started taking magnesium at night too. I guess I’ll have to wait for a couple of months to see if the magnesium helps. But if this continues I think I will have to get the coil removed and go back to femeston tablets.

I put the gel on right before bed too, ensuring that it’s dry.

I put my gel on in the morning and don’t sleep well - hadn’t even thought of putting it on at night. I’d be interested to hear if gel timing has made a difference to others.

Makes no difference when you apply it.
It stays in your system over 24 hours so it's not like a drug that gives you an instant 'hit'.

Magensium- there was a long feature on the BBC Home page (online) a few days ago all about this and it being the latest 'craze'. Several experts including a nutritionist commented and said it does nothing, and the best way is to eat foods with magnesium in.

Here's some of it. (It's still on the web.)

Take sleep health, for example. Ms Stavridis says there are many conflicting studies on whether magnesium supplements really make a difference. Some trials say it can have some benefits, while some randomised controlled trials - the gold standard - are more sceptical.

There is also the added complication of supplements potentially working against each other because of the way they interact in the body.

Basically, Ms Stavridis says, it's a minefield, and not just a simple case of "take this" and you'll be fixed.

She recommends looking at diet first. But if you are thinking about taking magnesium supplements, Ms Stavridis advises taking half the amount recommended on the packet on a daily basis and seeing how you feel.
If healthy people take too much, their kidneys can get rid of it in "expensive urine", but there are still risks, like diarrhoea, vomiting and nausea.
For those with kidney disease, taking magnesium supplements can be dangerous and can cause hypermagnesemia - a potentially life-threatening condition that can leave someone with paralysis or in a coma.
Dietitian Kirsten Jackson also says most people should "100% look at diet first".
Foods like seeds, nuts, whole-grain breads, greens and fruit are good sources of magnesium, she says.
She warns that if you don't regularly consume these types of foods, you're probably also short of other essential nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K, fibre and prebiotics too.
"One magnesium supplement is not going to sort all that."

For me the progesterone tablets have the biggest impact on my sleep. I take just before bed. As they are calming and stop the 4am panic waking. Then being in the right dose and form of oestrogen. For me the patches work.

I don’t think you get the same sleep benefits from the coil. It obviously protects the womb though and provides contraception so can see why people choose it. My sleep was too bad so had to go down the Ustrogestan route.

Interesting. I will see how I go with three pumps of the gel, but if this continues I may look into taking the coil out and using progesterone tablets instead. It’s such a minefield!
