Itchy eyes driving me crazy - anyone else had this and any suggestions??

I'm 56 and have been peri-menopausal for a while. Last period was 50 days ago so who knows if that was the last one??

Many symptoms but the one that's annoying me most at the moment is the itchy eyes. It's maddening. I got some dry eye drops from the GP and they didn't help. Am using Crotamiton drops just now as they are for itchy hayfever-ish eyes. Can't say they're helping either.

Unfortunately, I can't have HRT as it makes my hair fall out. Actually, a lot of things make my hair fall out, but HRT is right up there.

Can anyone suggest anything other than HRT that might help my eyes. I'm going mad!

Thank you.

Having never had hay-fever I had really itchy, watery eyes this summer. I used Hycosan Dual and found this helped.

Just a thought re the HRT, have you tried the vaginal pessaries as opposed to oral meds?

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 19/10/2025 15:43

@AppleDumplingWithCustard - thank you, I will look at that.

@AppleDumplingWithCustard - Yes, I have tried the pessaries. They still had the effect on my hair. I feel that no-one believes me, even the GP was sceptical but it was too much of a coincidence.

It's a shame as I'm sure they could really help with many symptoms.

Thank you!

I don't have HRT but I do buy eye drops.

Have you been to an optician? They’d be able to take a detailed look at your eyes and identify if there is a specific cause and suggest a treatment.

soolantra as used for rosacea, I use for occula rosacea, only thing that helps me. need to get on prescription though and maybe don't tell GP u want it for eyes.

I developed hay fever and an allergy to cats during peri menopause. I have had cats all my life so a bit of a shock. Anti histamines help me.

How do you use the Soolantra for ocular rosacea? Do you put the cream around your eyes?

apologies for delay... I use on my eyelids and all around. and as a face moisturiser at night. I have not had any averse reactions and I am very sensitive. I find if I stop sing it the itching comes back. I am careful it doesn't go right in my eyeballs but not that careful! I once read the entire internet in my desperation for some advice that wasn't fuxxing tea tree oil and found this Dr in Singapore was using ivermectin on his patients' eyelids for blepharitis. ocular rosacea seems to me to be the same thing. anyway I cannot find his website now but a quick google threw up this:

I can only tell you what works for me. Good luck.

Thank you - this is really interesting and helpful. I was prescribed invermectin a few months ago but have been too scared to use it yet.

Good to hear that you have not had any problems. I will give it a try. 🙂

KaliforniaDreamz · 09/11/2025 17:57

excuse my typos in previous post.

I get in on prescription now and wouldn't be without it. I do worry about long term use but as I said I am really sensitive to most things and have not had any adverse reactions. if u google you will see there are a few studies regarding ivermectin (targets demodex) but some suggest monthly use. I am using nightly. there are lots of companies making money from wipes and these all seem to contain tea tree oil. how that can be safer than ivermectin is beyond me. it also does not work! good luck.
