Urinary urgency - could this be perimenopause?

Occasionally I will go for about a week feeling like I am constantly needing to go for a wee, even just after I’ve been. It’s a bit like having a UTI but without the burning sensation. I always treat negative for a uti. After a week or two the symptoms pass, only to return again several weeks later with no warning.

Could this be a symptom of perimenopause? I’m a bit too young I think (42). I was wondering whether I should see a gp and try an oestrogen cream.

So far, every time I go to the GP they test for a uti and then say it’s negative so I’m fine. But the symptoms are awful, I’m so irritable with it and don’t feel like I can leave the house because I’m constantly looking for a toilet even though I know my bladder isn’t full.

I’ve been suffering with this too OP it feels like cystitis but without the burn. That feeling of needing a wee for hours on end but nothing to come out. I am 46 so am going through perimenopause at the moment. I started getting perimenopause symptoms at the age of 42.
i try and drink 2.5lt water a day to flush myself through or drink cranberry juice (which is meant to help cystitis) I hope you feel better soon. I use an app called Balance and there are a lot of ladies on there with great advice for women just starting perimenopause or going through menopause. It’s a lovely community and you can ask anything and get a lot more replies than on here x

Prolapse?

fourelementary · 13/10/2025 00:26

Another vote for a prolapse…any other signs or risk factors like assisted births or large babies born vaginally?

Whether it is peri-menopause , something completely unconnected, or something that is being triggered and / or combined with it, the point it, it is impacting your life and you need to make an appointment with your GP and insist they look into what the issue is.

Look up Drnighatarif if you are on Instagram - she is a real advocate for women's health. She has a list of things you should say at Drs appts
"This is having a significant impact on my quality of life"
"The pain is so significant that I can't {insert} work / walk / sleep / etc as appropriate"
"Please can you make a note as to why you are not investigating what is causing the issue / how we can resolve the issue"

etc
etc

and she also signposts to various guidelines and NICE directives GPs must follow.

She also explains lots of things about women's health in a really clear way.

I had this. It got particularly bad during Covid as no toilets in town..cafes etc all closed so l began to dread going into town and only felt safe at home. I was constantly planning where l could access a bathroom and it impacted my life terribly. My doctor put me on medication. I did exercises and did very expensive sessions on that chair that some women find helpful but nothing worked. Eventually l saw a gynecologist and l got botox in my bladder. It changed my life as it broke the cycle as the whole thing had got into my head..it was horrible. Its 4 years now and l don't know myself. Never had to have it repeated so it's wonderful.
I was a bit older than you and past the menopause though. But you have my sympathy.

I had similar symptoms. Of course it might not be the same, but I was told I had an overactive bladder, which can be addressed with bladder retraining. Notice if it happens more after caffeinated drinks. Do pelvic floor exercises when you get an urge. Don’t do a “just in case”wee. Look up bladder retraining and you will probably might find some info. The NHS gives out a guide. They even had me measuring my wee in a jug to see how much I could store, with the aim of increasing the capacity. It worked.

Book in with a pelvic physio for an assessment. I did and then started low dose oestrogen cream applied vaginally and it has helped, although I still go more often than the average person. She also gave me exercises to do to release my pelvic floor as it’s hypertonic - always locked on.

I'm 56, still in peri and had this over the summer. The urinary incontinence got so bad on holiday (camping) that I tried unsuccessfully to make an appt with my GP when I got back. Our practice has an online triage service that told me I needed an appt but none were available so I gave up. The problem has now gone away! I drink a lot of water anyway so do wee fairly regularly but this was the first time ever that I couldn't stop once the urge came and the urge was so sudden even if I'd been for a wee only five minutes earlier.

I have this. Started a few months ago. I’m 48, no children. GP did all the tests and there’s nothing wrong. For me it feels like it’s irritated but not awfully so but also like I might pee if I let myself relax. The nurse I saw the last time suggested it was in my mind.

Have you had a scan to rule out a physical issue?
