Feeling really low after period

SSRI · 06/10/2025 10:03

I feel really physically depressed and lethargic for a week after my period has ended. Once I’ve ovulated I feel normal, energetic and healthy and glowy again. I feel like two different people! And I think it’s getting worse every cycle.

I’m 45 and have regular but very heavy periods - I take tranexamic acid to lighten them.

Should I consider HRT or does it not sound like a hormone deficiency?

Could be hormonal for sure (someone may be along who knows more) - but could be iron deficiency from heavy bleeding. Could be worth looking into changing diet around this time?

I’m the same I think it must be hormonal but I’m definitely depressed/ anxious/ stressed/ so incredibly unproductive at work for about ten days then it’s like a cloud has lifted and I whip the kids, house and work back into shape. I’m 46 I was really anaemic last year due to super heavy periods but had an iron infusion on NHS so sure it’s not that.

I have really heavy periods now and have to take a multi vitamin with iron all month round otherwise it catches up with me quickly. I am 42 so probably peri as well.

I've started taking vitamin d and iron over my period and after. I found they'd got heavier and it was leaving me tried, feeling weak and lethargic and at times kind of breathless. I ordered an online private blood test (cheap and loads of options, you can even get them in pharmacies and supermarkets similar to a covid test but you do a pin prick). It showed low iron and vit d (apparently they tend to go together or one helps the other absorb) - it's sorted me right out!

Go to see your GP! Please don’t take medical advice from Mumsnet!

Post menstral syndrome is an actual thing, just less known than pre and not so common. Look it up. I'm totally fine and evenly mooded at any other time, but the week after my period I'm an emotional wreck - knakered, teary and have a sense of hopelessness. I recognise the symptoms now and know it'll pass in a few days. I'm 46.

As above - see the GP.

I had bloods and my ferritin level was very low. 13. 10 it becomes abnormal but can range normally into the hundreds.

I was SO tired.

I started shedding hair. They told me ferritin had to be about 70 for ‘normal hair’.

I saw a gynaecologist who after various tests showed I had Adenomyosis (think endometriosis but it grows inwards to the cervix). This is why I had very very heavy bleeding each month.

The heavy bleeds resulted in the low ferritin. Borderline but Ok though so GP didn’t want to do anything for the iron and just carry on.

consultant got involved and stated I needed an iron transfusion.

I had that 2 years ago and also had mirena coil fitted to manage the bleeding.

now a light ‘normal’ bleed, hair is again normal and my ferritin is 360.

Don’t ignore it and put up with abnormal periods. As women we often do. It isn’t right. Visit the GP. Lots of harmless reasons for it but we shouldn’t just tolerate it. Women’s health is often overlooked.
