Oh the itching!

Anyone else get this? It doesn't seem as common a symptom as others. But I'm assuming it's a symptom of peri. I'm 42 and have had the odd other symptom - longer cycles sometimes when I used to be a clockwork 28 days - forgetfulness when I used to pride myself on remembering everything.

But the last six weeks or so my boobs have become SO ITCHY. Usually in one particular spot which is the outer side of my left boob - weirdly this boob also seems to have got a bit bigger recently - but as soon as I scratch there it leads to the rest of my chest, belly and back suddenly becoming so itchy that I just claw at myself. No amount of scratching stops the itch and I'm left feeling like my skin is on fire.

Nothing has changed like washing powder, clothes etc, so I'm putting it down to peri as I can't think what else it could be?! I've tried exfoliating in the shower and/or moisturising after but it doesn't help. Any magical tips please?

I'd get checked by a doctor if you've noticed changes in one of your breasts. It's probably nothing but I'd go anyway just to be on the safe side.

Yes, in the past few weeks, I have had the same problem. Itchy scalp and skin all over - driving me mad. My skin looks normal and not dry.
I mentioned it to a colleague. She said she had the same and it’s a meno symptom. Recommended taking collagen.
I have since bought Ancient and Brave Cacao and Collagen hot chocolate powder but also an antihistamine helps massively.

I mean I did consider that but have had a good check for lumps and dimpling / change in appearance and apart from seeming a bit bigger than normal, there's no difference (and the itching obvs). I thought if I called the doctor and asked to be seen because I'm itching I'd just get laughed at! When I google it it just gets mentioned as a "common" symptom or peri, it just seems to be one that is never talked about in personal experiences.

Have you had any blood tests? There is an autoimmune that can itching and more common in women after 40.

I get this. I take an antihistamine (cetirizine) every day and that keeps it at bay. Worth a try?

I’d really hope a gp wouldn’t laugh at a patient complaining of itching as it can be sign of liver/pancreas issues. However, I had horrific itching in peri mostly on my arms…. IMO it’s one of the worst symptoms of peri, along with disturbed sleep.. HRT sorted both out luckily

I know this wasn't the question you asked but but could you try getting a bottle of cold water from the fridge and putting it on the itchy patch? You do have to take it off if it gets too cold but it's the best thing I've found for maddening itchiness.

Ncagain41 · 05/10/2025 20:10

Never thought of the cold water thing. I'll definitely give that a go along with antihistamines before anything else. Thank you

I had exactly the same and thought I was going mad! Mainly in the evenings and it went in for months.
Ive been on HRT gel now for 6 months as well as having the coil and the itching as well as other peri symptoms have stopped.

Pubic mons (itching to the point it feels like the hair follicles are burning) and in my ears are my worst areas. But i also have to moisturise my legs before bed every night or they itch too.

I get some relief with antihistamines, and use mct coconut oil in my ears which is a game changer. Also HRT obviously helps!
