Palpitations/heartflutters anyone?

Hi all, I'm 45 and still currently having regular periods but with a few perimenopause symptoms. For the last month I've had some weird heart things going on as follows - thumping heart (its been like this the whole day today) odd flutters here and there and then sometimes massive thumps that can take my breath away. Period due in about 4 days, could this be the hormone drop off or I should get checked? Woke up fine this morning and it came on about 2 hours later. Obviously I'm noticing so there will be a level of anxiety associated but it feels horrid and thumpy (not particularly fast but going from sitting to moving I can feel every thump and increase) Anyone else?

This sounds exactly like my issue - eventually diagnosed after ecg and 24hr scan as harmless (but very unpleasant) ectopic beats.

Things that really help:

Reduce or ideally remove any caffeine including chocolate and coke
Regular cardio - I started running
High dose Vitamin D

For me it was low ferritin

I get these and things that have helped are cutting out caffeine, reducing alcohol and taking magnesium glycinate. Also, this might not work for everyone but if I have a particularly thumpy episode then something that stops them is tipping my head upside down with my legs raised, imagine sitting in reverse on the sofa.

Could be Atrial Fibrillation and you should see your doctor very soon .

I think I will try and get in with the GP this week, its very uncomfortable and also I think gets slightly worse after eating? I've lost 2st since last year and exercise regularly BUT slacked off a bit since Sept and its weirdly appeared. I do remember after having my daughter I had exactly the same symptoms and ended up going for a full MOT with ecg but nothing was detected which is why I'm wondering about the hormone connection

Interesting - have you suffered with this before previously or just appeared now?

I will give this a try - its horrid isn't it?

Hi OP.
I had this and my doctor referred me for a lot of cardiac tests. Luckily, nothing abnormal was found.

You do really need to see your doctor, so that the right investigations and treatment can be instigated.

I just suffered with it in peri, until I found out what it was. I read that palpitations were a symptom peri so ignored it, its only when I took the iron and they stopped that I realised it was low ferritin.

I had this, similar age. Then went into fast AF and ended up in resus. Eventually had an ablation.
Check your pulse, is it regular? If not you need urgent medical attention.

Dutchhouse14 · 06/10/2025 09:33

I had this too peri menopause, thankfully nothing sinister.
But do get checked out by GP.

urghhh47 · 06/10/2025 10:01

Mine were ectopic beats (dx via 24hr monitoring) but unfortunately at a level that requires treatment <10% ectopic beats is considered harmless. > Than 10% they usually treat. My result was >20% so I take a type of beta blocker (carvidilol) twice a day. Get it checked OP!

Bishbashbosh24 · 06/10/2025 12:30

My GP was keen to deal with my heart palpitations separately from my perimenopause, just to be absolutely sure. I had been having them from my mid 30s though. Heart monitor and scan revealed I have SVT. So although it can be a symptom linked to meno, the fact that they last all day like mine do might indicate something else.

Has your thyroid been checked recently? Did you intentionally lose weight or did it drop off you? Overactive thyroid can cause elevated heart rate and palpitations as well as weight loss.

Following as have the same and a few trips to A&E later I’ve got an appointment for a 24hr tape on Wednesday. I’ve given up caffeine and it’s better. Also had to stop my headache prophylaxis as it causes palpitations. It makes me so anxious which doesn’t help matter at all.
let us know how you get on OP.

FirstCuppa · 06/10/2025 20:23

Palpitations can be caused by a lot of things - low B12, anxiety, thyroid all being big ones that can be linked to menopause. Rule those out and mention it happens in sync with your cycle so might be hormonal. I'm on proprananol for irregular heartbeat, anxiety and migraines I was getting around my period. Also now on HRT as it made me aware my cycle was changing but the proprananol certainly helps with the palpitations.

It sounds like my migraines - I didn't realise what they were for over a year as weirdly didn't get headaches with them for a long time, just vertigo, flashes in the corners of my eyes and nausea. I had no idea you could have migraines without headaches! Anyway am on proprananol which stops them as well as the palpitations, so might be worth looking in to.
