Progesterone intolerance

Hi I'm feeling awful due to side effects from progesterone. I am investigating alternatives, one of which is coming off. Please can you tell me if you experienced progesterone intolerance and came off hrt altogether, how was it for you?

Thanks for posting this thread, I had terrible side effects from utrogestan so I’m interested in reading about alternatives.

JJkate · 20/01/2026 12:09

@Bookspizzacoffeehow has it been for you? Are you on anything at the moment? I take magnesium glycinate which helps with sleep and am intending to buy some ashgawanda as have heard that can help with mood.

I’ve just read this thread after feeling really positive about give HRT a try and now I’m really worried! 😩 I have M.E. and am sensitive to some meds etc so now I’m worried I’ll react to the progesterone!🙈

merina coil worked for me. First 3 months were awful, but then it stopped my ovulation and has been great.

JJkate · 20/01/2026 20:17

@LLJETO I think progesterone intolerance only affects a minority of women. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

I have just read the whole thread and wonder how common progesterone intolerance must be. I spent six months since last April being so uncharacteristically sad, paranoid and hopeless before connecting it to progesterone. I started to use iutrogestan vaginally in November and feel so back to myself. Now I have developed an allergy to patches and have switched to gel today so hope this doesn’t affect the new status quo. These chats are so so useful, particularly when so many posts are 100% positive about HRT. It can be strangely comforting to read the pitfalls too. Thank you all

Hi all. I'm posting an update. After much research I decided not to try other types of progesterone. One big factor in this (on top of v low mood) was that I have had quite bad hair loss that was getting worse and worse and the other types have reports of similar side effects. I decided to come off completely by tapering.

I started to taper the oestrogen gel by reducing by 0.2 MCG per week over 8 weeks. I finished this and took my last progesterone in mid December.

It's early days but I feel so much better. My low mood has gone and I just feel like myself again. I expect peri symptoms will return but have decided that is preferable to major depression most days. I was very scared how it would go but it has been fine.

Please let me know how you are doing and if you have any questions. I will try to update how it is going over time too.

Have you asked your gp about Tibolone?

@JJkate Hair loss is linked more to loss of estrogen.
You may not find stopping HRT helps.

You can use micronised progesterone vaginally which can reduce or get rid of most side effects on mood.

Something to think about if you start again?

JJkate · 22/01/2026 09:11

@Branleuse hi, I have heard of this and after much research decided HRT is not for me. Thanks anyway

@JinglingSpringbells hi Jingling, I tried vaginally and it made me very emotional and tearful so no good. I think progesterone just does not suit me unfortunately. I've always been the same, reacted badly to the pill etc. Thanks for the suggestion. I agree, the hair loss could still happen. I have been tested for low iron and now taking supplement which has slowed it down. If it doesn't help I'll just have to invest in pretty hats, scarves and maybe wigs 😀

Feeling pretty much suicidal for most of the month is just not worth it. Now I'm off hrt I feel fine and like my old self. So far...

@JJkate sorry to be dim, but are you now not taking anything? I keep longing for this if so, but making a long list of pros and cons of giving up atm. The main thing stopping me giving up is the terrible joint aches.

If we are updating - the Slynd progesterone seems to be fine still, but I do feel dulled. The issue now for me was after a scan for thicker womb lining and then a hysteroscopy back in November (all clear apart from, ovarian cyst, adenomyosis, polyps and fibroids, oh and a prolapse - it must be quite crowded in there!) Dr has upped my Everol patch to 75 and I am bleeding constantly. I guess I have to wait 3-6 months for this to settle. The hair loss has slowed though.

So the choices seem to be either bleak and depressed with no bleeding or relatively steady mood but constantly bleeding. Yay.

It's all so very hit and miss.

JJkate · 22/01/2026 10:27

@CapriceDeDieux hi, sorry to hear about your troubles, that sounds like a lot. Yes that's right I'm not taking anything now and so far am feeling much better for it. I think I'm just one of those people who can't tolerate hrt. I can't tolerate most medication either, most things make me feel quite unwell. I have heard ashgawanda is good for evening out mood so if rage comes back I will try that. I have made a lot of changes in the last few months, am socialising more and moving more and trying to build in things to look forward to which has been good. Good luck to you 😊
