Anyone NOT gained weight on HRT?

Fromthelions · 28/09/2025 18:03

Have just been prescribed HRT but am scared to take it as I have a history of eating disorders. Anecdotally lots of people seem to say they have gained weight on it, ans that’s certainly true of some (but not all) of my friends.

Just wondering if there’s anyone who has had positive or neutral experiences re weight gain? Also, how long does it take to have an impact on symptoms in general?

No change to brain fog at all. That's had no improvement.

Night sweats stopped after a few weeks, returned several times, went up in dose twice and now two years later I sleep all night and can stay under a duvet again!

I never had insomnia, I just kept waking up with sweats.

I've lost around 7st around the perimenopause/HRT stage.
But I think that's because I had PMDD before which led to a binge eating disorder so less hormones meant less food obsession for me.
It's Def worth trying if you are having symptoms though.

Me. No weight gained at all. I’m very sensitive to the progesterone part in terms of mood so stick it up my flue instead of taking it orally and it’s been fine. I’m more bloated since being on continuous HRT but I’ve not gained any weight. I take 2 or 3 pumps of oestrogen gel (was 2, went up to 3 but I’ve dropped it back down again) and one capsule of progesterone.

I've been on Hrt for many years and had no weight gain. The big plus was that within a few days of starting it all my hot flushes disappeared and l just felt so much better. Dr's at my surgery keep trying to get me off it (as l am old) but l keep insisting l want to stay on it for life!
Another good reason to take it is it protects your bones, a recent dexa scan showed my bone density was very good and the operative who scanned me said in her experience that was the case with women who were on hrt.

I must be going against the grain here because I've gained weight since stopping HRT. No idea why, my diet is healthy and I've been actively trying to lose it with little success, unless your body hangs onto fat cells for dear life if oestrogen levels fall? It's bloody annoying.

Jadebear · 08/10/2025 16:31

I’ve been on it for approx 3 years and haven’t gained weight. Stayed the same weight I was before I started taking it.

Mrsbunnychops · 08/10/2025 16:36

I’ve lost weight since starting HRT as feel better and my body has not been desperately creating fat cells (which help make a form of oestrogen) plus my muscles have gradually increased thanks to testosterone too. It’s been a very gradual thing though

I completely understand this post. I had an eating disorder in my 20s and whilst I’m now back to a more normal eating routine it’s not something that ever truly goes away. I’ve heard more than once the phrase ‘it’s never recovery, think of it like remission’ and you have to be aware of that and triggers.

Not saying people don’t get over it, just the compulsion can come back if not monitored.

so being honest, yes I out on weight, wasn’t a lot, about 5 pounds. I haven’t changed my eating or exercise at all, that’s the only thing that has changed. A bit annoying but I’ve made peace with it.

I’ve stayed the same pretty much but it’s been a frustrating struggle because I would quite like to lose a stone. I feel like for 2.5 years I have just lost and gained the same 7lbs in a slow cycle of very slow losses and incredibly quick gains. I’m not overweight (just) but if I had another year of gains without the constant dieting to keep it off I would be.

shivermetimbers77 · 10/10/2025 08:22

Me! I’ve lost weight on HRT

bagsofbats · 10/10/2025 08:31

I lost about half a stone before going on (cleaning up my diet as I thought that was why I was feeling shit) been on for a year now and haven't put it back on.

Thanks for posting this, I'm putting off asking for HRT or anything to assist with peri for this exact reason, also have a history of DD and terrified of putting on weight, it's controlled now with regular running, but if I felt that wasn't helping me keep at the same weight I'd get really anxious

LaChouette · 11/10/2025 08:01

I lost weight initially. 3/4 years later I am back to where I started, not truly overweight, but about a stone over where my clothes fit best. I live in hope of shifting it again, but beginning to think it is going to be a losing battle as my 50s march on.

LaChouette · 11/10/2025 08:03

duplicate post because MN lagged

Lolalovesroses · 11/10/2025 08:04

I’ve been on Evorel Conti for a year and not gained any weight.

HopingForTheBest25 · 11/10/2025 08:12

I feel like it is affecting my weight - I am eating a lot less than I used to (too busy at new job to raid the fridge), but am not losing any weight.
I am very sensitive to progesterone - I don't get any of the nice, chilled effects that other people describe. I can tolerate it in patch form but I wonder if it's this which makes the difference.

101trees · 14/10/2025 20:51

I have lost weight. I was only 57kg anyway, but now I'm 53kg.

I haven't actively tried to lose weight, but I do feel much less bloated. I think maybe because utrogestan is a diuretic?

PerriFuckingSickOfIt · 15/10/2025 20:41

Yes apparently most everyone I fucking know apart from me doesn’t gain any weight.

I can’t stand the progesterone
