Palpitations driving me mad

I’ve got a cold at the moment and since then they’ve been worse with me constantly aware of my heart beating. I feel rather rubbish with the cold. Tiny violin time.
Has anyone found anything that helps? My oestrogen has been increased but this time it’s not helped settle them.
It’s making me anxious and I hate feeling anxious and being anxious will make it worse of course. I’m fit and very active, BMI 21/22, don’t smoke or drink. Two cups of tea a day. No energy drinks or coke. No drugs. I’m on 3 pumps of gel, vagifem and 100mg progesterone vaginally.
Any advice much appreciated while I wait for the GP to hopefully suggest something.

I’ve got an appointment at the GP this afternoon (but being seen by a paramedic who takes clinics-she saw my Dd with tonsillitis and was excellent) so I’m hoping for some answers. It’s not as bad now but really freaks me out. Deep breathing doesn’t seem to help much but I’m open to trying anything.

Obviously do all the things you need to do to get it properly checked out, but if it does turn out to just be an annoyance I have found that wearing a smart watch with heart alerts reassures me as I can ignore my own worries and know that I’ll get an alert if anything is going on that does need doctor input.

I do need to update my smart watch because mine refuses to display anything most of the time even though it’s charged. I’ve got my eye on an Apple one. I stopped a medication on the advice of the GP and last night didn’t have the stuttering type palpitations at bedtime so that’s a win. No caffeine to see if that helps and wait for cardiology.

Have you had your thyroid levels checked?

Oestrogen gave me palpitations

MagpiePi · 25/09/2025 07:19

I get more anxious and feel kind of wired if my oestrogen dose is too high.

I also had noticeable palpitations a little while ago, particularly noticeable at night, and ended up having a heart monitor for 24 hours. The results showed that there was some heart arrhythmia but my GP assured me this was entirely normal and that if you are thinking about it you are going to notice it more. She is very honest and I trust her, so I didn't feel I was being fobbed off as a mad old menopausal woman.

I’ve had palpitations for a long time related to other health conditions (I’m only just entering peri territory at 40), so different circumstances, but I do understand how horrible they can be. I was only ever given an ECG once after my heart rate was 160 (GP caught me mid palp!) but as the results were fine nothing was done.

What helps me when I’m having one, is to lie down (if possible!) and breathe slowly and deeply. Try to stay calm - if you focus on it, it’ll feel worse. If you’re out and about or working, try to sit down instead and again breathe slowly and deeply. Sipping a glass of water helps too. I know it’s not much but I hope this helps a little OP. Fingers crossed your GP can help 💐

I’ve got an appointment through for the 24hr tape in a couple of weeks which is great. Amazingly last night I didn’t have any palpitations at all at bedtime which indicates that my medication was causing those particular ones.
