Short cycles

I'm 44 (45 in Feb) and my last 4 cycles have been 20, 16, 33 and 16 days having previously been a regular 26-28 days since they came back after my daughter around 7 years ago. I'm pretty sure that this is peri and so in that regard I'm not concerned and I haven't had many other symptoms other than a couple of migraines and what I now think may have been night sweats/hot flushes and not just hot weather.
My question is whether or not I should see the GP? I read online that short cycles (fewer than 21 days) under the age of 45 should be investigated by a Dr.

See the GP. I’m the same age, had night sweats, joint pain, monthly vertigo, and cycles varying between 23-33 days. (Also brain fog and some MH symptoms but was also having an awful time at work, so can’t tease that out).

Started HRT in January and instantly felt better. All the above symptoms have gone.

Though cycles have started to go haywire again (last one 34 days, and apparently this one is 20 days).

HRT will not only help your symptoms but will protect your heart and bone health. Go ask your GP.

Thank you 😊
I've got one booked. It's in 5 weeks but I guess it's not an emergency situation!

I think it depends why you want to see a GP and what outcome you want.
I've never read anything about short cycles in peri being reported to a GP, although that would be applicable to someone much younger and you're so close to 45.

If you see your GP what would you want to happen? They may do some blood tests just to check on your overall health but at 44 any hormone tests won't be reliable.

I understand that they're not reliable. I've done my research.
However, bleeding every 2 weeks really isn't ideal. Honestly, I think that when you're this age with a busy life and young kids it can be hard to distinguish what's life and what might be related to peri. Is my occasionally feeling anxious and foggy perimenopause or just me coping with life. I'm pretty fit and exercise but I'm feeling a bit creaky. I had migraines as a teenager so I can see that hormonal fluctuations might be causing them again. Plenty of friends my age are on HRT. Maybe a chat with the Dr will help me to unpick these things and make an informed decision.

You've definitely done the right thing in booking to see the GP. A change to your cycle always warrants a visit.
Good luck, OP!

Oh wow you sound exactly like me! I’m also 44..Over the past 3 months I’ve had 21, 24, now 17. I’m also feeling creaky even though I exercise and I’ve got various other niggles (digestive issues, sore boobs, dry eyes!!) I know you won’t have seen your GP yet but wanted to send solidarity and ask how you are x

I’m 42 and my cycles range from 24-27 days but yesterday I started bleeding on day 16. I’ve had aura migraines on and off since May this year so wondering if it is perimenopause? I’ll get checked out by the GP.

Tiddlywinkly · 09/11/2025 18:14

I'm 42. I reported shorter cycles alongside hair thinning, itchy skin, low mood, sweating etc.

I had a blood test and now I'm on HRT and feel a lot better.
